Peavey V-Type Vs old Vandenbergs?

One of those came up for sale recently, and the reviews that I found on it were mixed. I think they were made in China or Korea or Indonesia or somewhere like that._________________________________________________

Yup, I had one of the new V-Types (mine was neck-through, in Trans Violet). As I recall, it was made in Korea. The body is Agathis (not really sure what that is). The pickups weren't the best, and would've been swapped out if I had kept it.
Fit and finish was excellent. Playability was very good. I think that with a pickup swap, it would've been a nice guitar, but it had a bit too much bling for me, in Trans Violet, with abalone-look purfling and binding everywhere. I really love the headstock, and I have to hand it to Peavey for that, because it is obviously very hard to come up with a new headstock shape that looks good. One other thing, I think you'd have to get the actual Peavey case for it, because that body has a really fat rear end and doesn't fit in a regular case.

I'm sure they are right on par with many of the other Korean made guitars like LTD or Schecter. They look nice, but all that inlaid abalone is too much for me.
I have a Peavey Destiny from the same era as the Vandenbergs. It's very similar, but has a more Soloist shaped body.
Would I trade my old beat up, worn out, USA made Peavey Destiny with a repaired headstock for a new V-type?
No.

Yeha I'm not too swept up by that bling-finish. They should just keep it simple on the bindings. If I get one someday it would probably be my Eb guitar for hair band and 80's rock songs!'87 Kramer Stagemaster Custom

The V-Type is a decent, cheap rock guitar.
The Vandenberg was a great Made in USA beast, with excellent tone and playability, definitely on par with Charvel San Dimas.
The combination of a fairly unique bridge pickup voicing and woods gave it a very '80s tone, with lots of upper mids and harmonics, way more pronounced than any guitar I've played, think of an exaggerated version of V. Campbell's tone on Holy Diver.
Bottom line though, you can't really compare them.

I know what you mean Spike, I've had 3 of them over the years. I buy it, get disappointed, sell it. Get the itch, buy it, get disappointed, sell it.
It's a guitar that is just sort of "there" if you know what I mean. Good, but in the utilitarian "peavey" sort of way. Nothing "wrong", but y'know? Why the hell doesn't Eddie pick up a goddamned guitar and play something?

I got this one because I had some change left when I bought an Engl. It's a nice enough guitar but I'm in the process of getting rid of my budget guitars so it'll probably gone in a couple of months. It looks pretty cool and it's put together better than my LTD but the Floyd Rose on it is worn out and the Peavey Licensed Floyd Roses are based on the Schaller ones which makes swapping it out for an OFR whilst keeping it a fully-floating Floyd Rose a bit tricky.
