  • Do you guys have guitars specifically for stage use only?

I guess we all know about it, those players who have guitars for home and studio use and guitars for stage use and seldom or never use them for other purposes.

Examples are Jimmy Page's double neck Gibson, he bought that guitar to use on live renditions of "The rain song" and of course "Stairway" Or Brian May's John Birch' built "Blonde special" which was commissioned as a live back up for his home made "Red Special" guitar. It never got used in the studio.

In my case, my self built red explorer is my for live use only guitar.

Made last year using left over pieces of walnut and maple and an old Strat neck, this number features a Washburn double locking vibrato (no routing required) and GFS pickups, it's as basic as they come and yet it sounds amazing when I use it live. But for some reason I haven't used it in the studio or on home recordings. I don't know why but this workhorse is a live use only guitar.

Yeah, I have my players and my special ones that stay safe. Lately I've been sticking to playing the KV1.
I'm not afraid to bleed, but I won't do it for you.

I think most double-necks are probably live-use only. They're not real practical to have around the house.

Anyway, since I'm mainly a bedroom performer, all of my axes are reserved for "studio" use.

        No,
But then again when I used to play out, I was younger and only had 1 guitar. So it was everything.

Now that I have a better job and can afford to have multiple guitars, I don't have the time to play out.

I bought a DK1 and a refinished Gibson Gothic V w EMGs specifically to use at gigs. I was too paranoid to leave CS guitars lying around unattended....

I've used all my guitars on stage. Lately, I've been mostly a basement player but if I'm lucky enough to get back on a stage, I won't mind using any of my guitars. Anyway, I don't own any vintage or high end/boutique stuff...

Usually when I play out I use PCS-15 and a red KV2. Sometimes I use my white Explorer too.

live, i pretty much play one of the following guitars (all usa jackson):

                holoflake sl-1 (standard tuning)
white CS charvel dinky (dropped D)
                solar PC-1 (back-up, standard)
                22 fret DK-1 (back-up, dropped D)

i use different guitars on stage than in the studio. in the summer months i will do a bit of session work. depending on the session i will bring certain guitars that may fit into the vibe of the project. i also will bring a guitar or two that may be "outside the box" to a session, like a usa jackson.

but for the most part, i HATE the way my jackson's sound on recordings, so i use brian moore, prs, hamer, fender or ibanez guitars.

                pretty funny!!!

I try to have two of everything (its nuts I know), but I haven't played out in awhile. I have doubles for most of the 80's stuff but the Gibsons are a little expensive to do that with (just for a spare). I try to buy say 88-95 Gibsons to play out. They're good, and not so expensive. then the Soloist, the Hamers, and a G&L tele for singles.
Why the hell doesn't Eddie pick up a goddamned guitar and play something?

This guitar has seen just about every stage in Shreveport/Bossier City except the CenturyTel Arena. However, it's also spent many months in the studio. It's currently providing inspiration in my music room, resting up for a big gig April 10th and 11th at The El Dorado Casino Resort.

When I played live I had a Les Paul, KV3, and MexiStrat, so yeah, those got used. By the time I got my other Jacksons, the band had broken up

But I'd use any of mine on stage if I had the chance - even the WarAngel and Halford.

I don't understand how a guitar can get damaged at a gig unless you're hopping around on a crowded stage, or through some other personal irresponsibility.

i know what you mean. i have NEVER had a guitar bothered during a show. i unpack them, the singer repacks them - no scrathces, dings, dents....i have had my holoflake for 4 years now and i have played about 140 shows in that time with it....the only ding came from me at home!!!!!

When I originally bought my SD III, I also had one of the 90s soloist pros which I used as my stage guitar and the SDIII was so sweet I never wanted to take it out so it was my plan to use it as a studio guitar only. However, when my car was stolen and totaled out, I had to sell several guitars (including the soloist pro) in order to buy another car and I have yet to get my hands on another guitar that holds up to the tone and playability of the SDIII so it has become my main axe for stage as well as studio. Over the years, despite my attention to the way she is handled, she has gotten a couple of minor dings and the trans finish on the upper portion of the guitar (where my arm rests) has dulled a little but hey, it's mojo right?

As soon as I get the money together, I plan on changing out the pups on my BOF DK2 and eventually putting an OFR on it, and I'm hoping then it'll hold it's own with the SDIII, then maybe it'll be "stagable." Until then, the Duncan Designed pups that are in there just don't cut it.
