  • PRS necks, anyone?

I'm really digging the look of a Paul Reed Smith Custom 22 lately, but I'm more than a little concerned about the way the necks are mounted to the body. When the neck and body meet at the top fret, is this really enough "overlap" to be stable over time? What holds these things together? Magic? Force of will?

With a neck-through design I'd have no worries, but set-necks seem like they ought to be more prone to problems with so little material holding them to the body. Am I concerned over nothing, or is there some validity to this way of thinking?

    Nah.
    They are plenty stable.
The tennon goes to the neck pickup.

Gibson's done them that way since the 50's with the DC's.

I had a '96 Custom 22 for years and it was solid as a rock. Wish I still had it. Awesome guitar with beautiful tone. Those Dragon 1 pups sounded amazing.

I've see Michael Akerfeldt playing tug-o-war with a bunch of fans, with his infamous blue PRS.

Needless to say, the security joined in once Mikey started losing, and the neck was just peachy!

I don't think I'd be playing tug-of-war with it, but that makes me look at them in a whole new light. Thanks!

I've got 5 of them. No issues. I've never even seen a pic of a broken one.

I don't have a pic, but my old guitar teacher did manage to break the neck on his PRS.
To do it he had to fall down a flight of stairs going to the basement. The guitar hit the cement headstock 1st.

Actually, his break was not at the heel. It was down the neck from the headstock to the 10th or 12th fret.

Nice tortoiseshell 89 Custom didn't last a year before they had to re-neck it.
