Think 12 string guitar. Now remove the 2 strings next to the 5th and 6th strings. If those were there and you have some gain/distortion, you'd get mud.
Just like on a 12 string you fret the extra strings along with the "regular" strings. You get that fuller, brighter sound.
It's hard to bend strings on these but they sound killer. It takes a little more hand strength but it's easy to get used to.
