  • Safe to remove neck for refinish??

I'm about to send my ESP MII guitar body to be refinished. I bought it in
the late 90's in metallic purple....I'm getting it done in black. Anyway, since the turnaround time is 6-8 weeks, is there anything special I should do with the neck while it is off the body? Loosen the truss rod??

Take it off and pack it away safely. Treat as you would any other guitar. Now is a good time to moisturize and clean it up as well.
Since there no tension on it there is no reason to put the truss in a more "neutral" position. It will just help the neck hold its shape so re-assembly will be much easier and less tedious on the setup. I hang up necks while they are waiting on bodies so they stay more neutral.

I don't know much about esp, but is that model bolt-on? Because if it's not, you can't take it off, just have it covered in tape!
I hooked up my accelerator pedal in my car to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

Yes i just looked, and ESP MII's are nekthrough (unless your's is different) so there will be no neck removal...

You need to work on your reading comprehension.
It's obviously a bolt-on neck if you can take it off the body.

+1. It should be OK taking it off. No need to change the truss rod setting. Once you put it back on, it may take a bit of time to reseat to its original relief, but that is OK. JMHO.

Thanks everyone! Also, yes, my MII is the bolt on version. It is true that the newer
MII's come in either bolt on or neck through versions, though. I'll stick to USA Jacksons
for my neck thru guitars Would love to add an SL1 to join my SL2H someday.

I understand that he said he wants to take the neck off. But along time ago i didnt undertand the different types of neck joints. I had EVERY intention of buy an epi and a cheap gibson and putting the neck on the epi. I also looked up and only found neck-thru models, so I thought maybe he was unsure of the the different neck constructions variations. Also never did he specifically say he had a bolt-on, which would prove he knew what he was talking about. I know you all want to look like know-it-all geniuses but if you look back, it is believeable to think that JUST maybe he was not completely sure of the neck construction....

Again, you need to work on your reading comprehension.

"is there anything special I should do with the neck while it is off the body?"

While it is off the body implies it's a bolt-on.

...or proper grammar. I think it's "we teenagers".

But I could be wrong and just made a fool of myself.

                        "We" teenagers is correct.
Just take the neck off and hang it or lay it out of the way.Nothing needs to be done to it.
                        Really? well screw Mark Twain.

But NEVER did he say he DID take it off. Also since he was asking what to do WHEN it is off makes it sound like he will do whatever we say AFTER he takes it off. It NEVER said the neck was off. And I remember that phrase NOT being there, so if ANYTHING you need to work on making inferences...

I admit, I should have explained this better in my first post. Anyway, thanks to everyone, and Jacksonguy, for making sure I wasn't about to saw off the neck on a neck thru guitar.

He said he was getting a refin and wanted to know about the neck once it's off. That means it's a bolt-on and he would be taking it off. You need to stop spouting off random shit you have no clue about, like you've done in quite a few threads.
