  • Redyeing the purple flamey strat...

So, those that have been around a bit may recall a very striking purple flame top strat of mine. I sold it to Newc last summer and bought it back this past spring. Sadly, what was once a vivid purple flame top faded out over a few years. So when I got it back, I figured I'd just shoot some purple candy over the top and clear it. The only thing that sucked was that I didn't like the shade of purple. So I sanded it down to the wood and dyed it. Here's a video:

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

If you don't feel like watching, here's some before and afters....

That's when it was purty. Here's an example of the fade:

Here it is a few days ago, after the first dye application:

    Here it is, sanded back:

And here it is after sanding back, then dyeing again:

I'll hit it with some sealer tomorrow and hopefully clear it this week.

    Good times.

Looks great. Dying is an area I have not ventured in yet. Nice job!

                  Hey Sully,
What dye/mixture did you use ? I've never gotten purple to turn out quite that deep.

Sully-vision TV, the only channel worth watching.

Looking forwards to seeing the clear-coated finale.

                          Hey there,

It's the water based aniline dye from LMI. I think i did about 3/8 of the 1/2 oz of dye mixed in about 6 - 8 oz or so of distilled water. I knew I shoulda written it down, but that's pretty close. It's more purple in person, oddly enough, although when I put the dye on in the video, it's pretty accurate. Gonna get sealer on it today and hopefully clear it this weekend.

From the first part of the video? It was okay, but more magenta than it photographed. My goal was to get it close to how it was originally, and that wasn't working, so I scrapped the idea.

                              Thanks Sully,
I've had good luck with the solid pigment and the liquid both. I guess mine was too lean before. I'm always worried about it being too dark.
Have you used the alcohol based dyes? I've had good luck with them as well as far as the reds and ambers. I've never tried the purple or blue with them.
