Picked up a Model 4 yesterday to add to the collection. This one is near perfect with very minimal play wear and one "ding" on the entire guitar. Came with the grey "chainsaw" case and the price was right. It is an 87 or 88 (chime in if you know). Today it gets a full set up. Now, if I could just find a sweet deal on a Model 6!

Looks like a sweet one! One way to possibly tell whether it's an '87 or '88 is to check the neck plate. If it has "TM" after the logo, it's probably an '87. "R" would more likely be an '88. Going by some of the older dating threads, the "R" on the headstock isn't quite as reliable as it is on the neckplate. It's not an exact science, and I really don't think they made the switch right at 1/1/88. Some guys were trying to compile serial #s to put a dating guide together a while back, but I think that fizzled before they got anything concrete.

An exact replica of mine! Enjoy it...
Correction...not an exact replica.
Yours seems to have a different nut configuration. Mine has the plastic nut with the locking nut located just behind it, with the flat head srews instead of the allen head screws. Mine does have an "R" on the headstock, but "TM" on the neckplate and it is an '87. I checked the catalog scans of the '88 Model 4's, and they have the same nut setup as mine. Perhaps a neck change or a nut replacement?
