  • Intro + I'm looking for some advice on Charvels

    Hey everybody!!!

This is my first post on this board but I've posted a good bit on strat-talk.com (or net ?)

I currently play a 1985 Contemporary Standard 22 strat with duncan pickups (n= hotrails, m=quarter pounder, b=jb). I'm a Sava-fanatic and this amazing band introduced me to Charvels. I'm looking to get an old 80s or early 90s Charvel superstrat. I've done some research and I think the one that suits my needs best is the Predator.

With that said, does anybody here know of a better Charvel for Savatage kind of stuff (Hall of the Mountain King and earlier, not GB or Streets)?

Are Charvel Predators hard to come by? I've searched all over the net and I haven't found any.

    Thanks in advance!
RIP Criss Oliva -> Still The Orchestra Plays

After looking around here I found an NGD Model 4 that looks nice. Can anybody tell me about these as well and how the compare to the predator? I'm pretty much looking for the models that Criss Oliva played.

I've got a Predator that looks like the one in the Streets album. You could also look for a 3DR, which was the predecessor to the Predator. The H-S pickup config and 5-way switching options makes the Predator unique. There are some Fusion models that remind me of Predators as well.

        That's a beautiful guitar

Do the 3DRs have the schaller/floyd trem that's on the predator or do they have the suckish Jackson trem?

Thanks! The 3DR has the JT6 trem. I wouldn't say it sucks, but the JT590 is a better trem.

I think I'm probably going to end up with a Predator or a model 4.

I've seen a lot of pictures of Criss Oliva playing a white tele shaped Charvel with a maple neck and a reverse headstock. Did Charvel make a tele version of the Predator?

Nah, sounds like a Model 7 or a Legend.

You could have a trem added. Not hard at all really.

Keep in mind that Model 4 is a full-size strat, as opposed to the Dinky-sized Predator and 3DR.

Dinky? Is the neck undersized too?

Watch ebay predators show up in batches. You won't see any for a while then a few will pop up at once. You should have been around a month ago, I sold a firecrackle one in mint condition. one with a maple neck sold last week.

Man your killing me! By all means, if there is a better way to go than the predator, let me know ! Are the model series better?

No, the necks are regular size. A Dinky body is about 7/8 size of a regular Strat body.

Whether a Predator or a 3DR would be better, is most of all a matter of preference. The Predator has the better trem, but apart from that, they should be about equal in terms of quality. The biggest difference between them would probably be the neck angle, and there is where your preference comes into play.

Unless I'm misremembering things, I think the 3DR came with a top-mounted Floyd, while the Predator had a fully recessed one. This means that the bridge sits higher off the body on the 3DR, and that it has a neck angle to match (it would have a feel similar to a guitar with a Tune-o-matic style fixed bridge).

As I prefer top mounted Floyds, my pick would be the 3DR, and then upgrade the trem to a German-made OFR. But that's just me.

The 3dr also came with a crappy single coil and the predator has a nice mini humbucker. I think the neck was a little thicker on the 3dr.

all the model series are great guitars! some better then others.
