  • Predator logo question

To make it clear, I am not talking about the 3DR. I know the difference (thanks to the wonderful people on this forum) between the 3DR and the Predator.

Were there Predators with each version of the Charvel logo (the guitar-logo and the toothpaste logo)? I'm about to get a Predator and everything is correct (1 bridge humbucker, 1 neck "rails" humbucker) reverse headstock, etc. It has the guitar shaped logo, not the toothpaste logo. Is this ok?

Thanks. Confirmation of this would be great as I'm about to pull the trigger on this thing.

My Predator is a 1990 and it has the toothpaste logo, Schaller German Floyd and the open coil bridge pickup with the smaller route. I bought new from MF when they first opened. The original CEO of MF special ordered it since it wasn't in their cataloge. Great guitar.

Does anybody else know if there were predators with the guitar-shaped logo?

            Actually, 2 urgent questions...

            1. Was there ever a red 3dr with a neck "rails" humbucker?

            2. Was there ever a predator with the guitar-shaped charvel logo?

I need to determine fast if the guitar I'm about to buy is a 3DR, Predator, or hybrid.

It is Red with guitar-logo reverse headstock but with a neck humbucker.

            PLEASE HELP FAST

I've never seen a Predator with a guitar logo, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Transitional models turn up, as Turk suggested

but pickups can be changed. if that is the only thing to you that suggests Predator over 3DR, then I'd edge towards it being a 3DR with a swapped neck pickup. Previous owner didn't like the single coil & wanted to make it a two hum guitar.

If you like the guitar, make a call

I don't care about the pickup. I don't have photos of this guitar and I need a way to I.D. it over the phone. It has a reversed headstock and a guitar-shaped logo. It has a "rails" humbucker in the neck.

Did the 3DR ever come with a recessed bridge or was that only a predator thing? I don't want a 3DR because I want the schaller-jackson trem found on the predator.

I believe the 3DR was routed for pullback, but the trem wasn't recessed

can you get the seller to describe the trem to you?

That's what I'm going to do.

But what if there is a "transitional" 3DR that has a recessed JT-6 and a neck humbucker.

I'm very afraid of it sounding like a Predator but turning out to be a factory fluked 3DR. The fact that it doesn't have a toothpaste logo is worrying.

Is there any question that I could ask that would 100% tell whether it's a 3DR or a predator?

ah, there's another thing you can ask about, mentioned in the other thread - the Predator body has the recessed neck joint. They weren't doing that on the Model series.

What does that mean exactly. Is this refering to the "scalloped heel"?

yea, the scalloped heel. Good example in the second pic in this thread: http://www.jcfonline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=738174

                              Logos aside-
The 3dr will have a behind the nut lock and a non recessed jt6.
The predator will have a floyd nut and recessed schaller trem.
The 3dr is a good guitar but I would only pay around 250 for it. predators are going for around 400 now.
the white one is a 3dr but I think I had a schaller trem on it at the time of the picture.
