  • Model 4? What year?

    I'm new here and I have recently acquired a Charvel, what I believe to be a model 4. Can anyone confirm this for me and the year it was made?

    You'll see from the photo below that it has the Jackson licensed tremolo and shark tooth inlays (I guess this makes it a model 4a?).

    It has an 'R' next to the logo on the headstock, and an 'R' next to the logo on the neck plate.

    Can anyone help me date my new guitar?

    87 or 88 as the 86 model year had a kahler trem.

      There's a method to telling the TM and the R and whether there's a gasket on the neck plate to know if its 87 or 88 - search the Import forum - its out there somewhere.

        I just got an 86 Model 4 last nice (easy to tell from the Kahler). Your's looks a lot more intact than mine.

          Sweet, cheers for the help guys. I'll do a bit more research into the gasket and 'R' sign.

          Yeah, it's in almost mint condition, barely any fret wear either. Very happy!

              Serial number is 26XXXX, all I can remember off the top of my head.

              Does that give anymore indication of it's age?

                26xxxx IIRC would be early in the run, so it's probably a 1987.

                      I thought...

                      Kahler = 1986

                      Neck Plate "TM" / Headstock ® = 1987

                      Neck plate ® / Headstock ® = 1988

                      Toothpaste Logo = 1989 - 1991

                      (Thanks Racer X)
