  • Birthday surprise and a hello to JCF

Well I received a huge birthday surprise last weekend. I opened up a gun case sized box to find a Charvel case with this in it. I believe it is a Model 3 Kahler trem, maple neck and rosewood FB. I was unable to find any model 3's with the single volume knob and 5 way selector but thought you guys may be able to help identify what I have here. I am on a quest to find my original two Charvel's that started me looking on this forum many years ago..Model 5fx and Model 7. This one plays better than my ability and has a couple small nicks but its a start. Also I see Dave may have a few trem bars for it.

Anyone have a line on a model 5fx or model 7 let me know.

Can you please post a pic of the back of that body? Preferably with the electronics cover off, if you don't mind. The single coil cavities look like they are cut for tabbed singles, which is not what you normally see on a Model Series. I'm thinking it may be an '86 Model 2 with 2 added singles. If you post that pic it'll be easy to tell.

-edit- After thinking about it, I'm 99% sure that it is a modded '86 Model 2, because that was the only Model Series guitar with that trem & no pickguard, but a pic of the back would help rule out some kind of oddball or Japan-only model.

pic of back side with covers off

I know it has been painted but it plays nice and looks good. If I ever find my original two Charvel's I'll custom paint this one.

        Thanks dg

Thanks for putting up the pic of the back. Yep, modded '86 Model 2.

Nice 7 & 5 FX! You should be able to track one of each down without too much trouble. May take a while for a trans-finished Model 7 to pop up, though. I just noticed yours had a regular headstock rather than reverse. Any idea if someone did a neck swap with a Model 1? There were some Japan-only teles with regular headstock...

              reply to your questions

I'm not sure dg as I was not the original owner on either guitar. Where's the best place to put out a bounty for those two models? Has it all gone to ebay and Craigslist? Or are there some guys from this site you could steer me towards?

Ebay is the best place to find them because it's worldwide. There's always the chance something good will pop up in the classifieds here, but even though it's a pretty big community, it's a drop in the bucket compared to ebay. You can post a "Want to Buy" ad in the classifieds to get the word out that you're looking for something specific. You're not supposed to do it in the other sections here, actually.

Hmmm, that's a weird 5FX with the blade switch instead of the toggle switch. They started life out as a 5A with the one hum, then some got sent back to the factory for the single coil and toggle, and some got tone controls.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.

                    Caught my eye too.
Looks like the tone was put where the toggle was, and the blade switch was added.

The model 7 looks a million times better with that headstock rather than the inverted one

Dude, don't feel too bad about those two. At least you have something to show for it.

My dumbass girlfriend had to pawn my prized, absolute #1...the Model 1 I'd owned and played exclusively for 17 years...while I was working out of town. And promptly got the dates wrong, in spite of my pestering and reminding her...gone. For $100 that probably went to her adult children and for her smokes.
