  • New Model 5

Picked this up a couple days ago, seems to be 100% stock with no major dings or dents. it looks a lot more faded/yellowed in natural light than with the led flash of the camera

I havent played it yet but what kind of tones can i expect out of it? there really isnt much info out there on model 5s...

Make sure you have a fresh 9 volt battery in that bad boy and using varying amounts of mid boost the bridge pickup should give you anywhere from AC/DC to Painkiller era Judas Priest.

so you got it a couple of days ago and haven't played it yet?

dude, send it over here--i'll play it!

looks like an '87-'88 model 5, poplar body; rosewood neck, 24 frets; 1 vol, 1 tone, 1 JE 1200, and 5-way switch; jt-6 bridge. with the je 1200, it should sound pretty good... warm. but you should play it--then you'll find out what tone it has.

Holy shit... I can't believe I just now noticed Model 5's are HH... Are they all? I've only really looked at 6's before.

The 5A is a 1 hum, the 5FX is a 5A with a routed slant single in the neck.

What pickups are in that, and how do you like them?

Yes stock original model 5's are H-H with 2 J-80C's and the mid boost circuit. The 5 way super switch would do Hums at the ends, both hums in the middle, and split humbucking using the inside/outside coils. Lots of tones to be found there but as said with the stock pickups in it it's very warm sounding.

I switched out the J-80C's and the midboost circuit for Blackouts and a 3 way switch in mine. and I miss the versatility a little but it still sounds killer.

That's pretty understandable... since they're new and all...

 Not sure how I never noticed that. Never want a 5 cause I like sharkies. But want a cheap neckthru HH. Maybe that'll be my first inlay trial.

i try to play mainly stoner/doom/sludge tuned way low and played way slow. i dont have much (or any) talent, but i enjoy myself. that said, i really like this guitar. i wanted a neck thru with humbuckers and i found this guy for 300 bucks so i bought it. im not a huge fan of the floyd, but im pretty sure its set up incorrectly- it cannot hold tune and it does not sit anywhere near parallel to the body. the pickups work just fine for what i do.
as for a analysis of the pickups- they work good for the stoner sound im after, but ive found that pretty much any humbucker does.
For those wishing to know the differences in sound between the jackson j series pickups here ya go:
Hey guys,On the COB forum some guys were asking about those pickups. As I got lucky enough to have all of them, I decided to make a soundclip showing the diff...

to me this guitar is well worth the money i paid for it, but what are model 5s going for online these days? was 300 a fair price?

For $300 you got a great deal...especially since it looks like it came in an original chainsaw case with good latches (at least the ones I can see).

                      Congrats and keep us posted!

Nope. The neckthroughs have poplar body wings. The bolt-ons had basswood bodies.

There are plenty of Kramer and Squire neckthrus that are cheap as well.

I got a Kramer neck-thru Music-Yo Barreta for $150 and it's pretty killer for a MIK. Reverse headstock, dual hum, three way toggle, push-pull tone to plit the humbuckers (mine didn't come with the Kramer quad-rails).

They best thing is that the neck has a killer profile. On the thin side but not wizard thin. If you were to ask me, they copied my SL2H's neck profile and thinned it just perfectly.
