  • Help with model 6 restringing

about 2 years ago i broke off the whammy bar in my model 6, its the later edition with the jt-6 bridge and behind the nut string lock. I figured out how to get the bar out, and found the locknut plates hidden in the truss rod cavity, so i thought id fix it up. I got a new bar, rescrewed the locknut down and put strings on. So far there are two problems, the b string doesnt follow a path past the nut and rubs against the locknut screw, making me worry that turning the screw will snap the string, also, on the b and e strings, which have each broke twice now, keep detuning themselves, as i am trying to get them to pitch, they lower back down, almost instantly, where does the problem lie here? thanks

Hi, photos may help in determining what the problem could be. If I had to guess, I'd say the behind the nut lock is installed incorrectly. It may be installed backwards or something.

The string lie thing is normal, they do that. The B string will be right up against the bolt shaft, but it will be OK. Push it over a teeny bit if you want when you lock it down... But you'll have to re-tune with the fine tuner after you do that.

Make sure the string lock is installed with the truss rod cover notch at the back, just in case tcwil8 is right about it being on backwards, that's the easy way to tell

Where are the string breaking? If they are breaking at the bridge I am going to say, you aren't tightening the string lock bolts enough and they're just pulling out, hence the detuning and "breaking."

But I don't know for sure, without knowing where the string is breaking, no one can tell you why it's possibly breaking. :dunno:

thanks guys, the e string broke right at the bridge, so maybe i need to tighten the string lock screws, i say on a video the guy said not to do them too tight because the die cast will break :S but i should probably just tighten them more, the nut lock is on properly, theres the groove for the truss rod cover, and ok i guess theres nothing i can do about the b string rubbing against it

ps. i just checked the b string, the lock was loose, tightened it and its been in tune since now if only i knew that 2 broken strings ago....

With the high E breaking at the bridge, just make sure it rides in the saddle properly before/while you lock into the bridge (I sometimes have to hold the string centered in the saddle as I take the allen wrench to the bridge with my other hand)...cuz once you start turning the tuner and tension is added, it is too late to check the saddle position.

Good to hear the nut is working for you. If I remember right (not by my guitars right now), the D string rides up against the middle screw just like the B rides the bottom screw. Strange design and you'd swear the string would pop, but I've never had any problems.
