  • New Here long time 80s Model Series fan

Hi all. I am happy to find this place. I have been playing guitar and bass since 1979. As a teen in the early 80s. I dreamed of owning a Charvel when first read about Wayne Charvels Fender replacement parts in a mag and it featured something about EVH building his guitar from Wayne's parts.
I became more of a bass player and always having cheap P bass copies. I always wanted to get the money to get the parts to build a Charvel bass or get a Jackson P style bass. But MAN the money.
Then in 86 I discovered that Charvel was coming out with the mass produced MIJ Model series. I finally had the money to buy a nice bass and I found out about them from a guy I knew that worked in a shop. From what He told me and a deal he made that I just could not turn down. If I pre ordered one of the new Charvel Basses. I could come in the day they came in and have my pick. If I did not like any of them. He would refund me in full. I went for it. Well they came in and I played them all. I ended up taking this one home and I still own it today. Only bass I still own today.

I got out of playing in bands in 90 and I play guitar much more these days. Only for my own enjoyment at home. I always wanted a 6 string to go with my bass. I had allot of friend that had Model Series back then and I played allot of them. Loved every one I got my hands on. So I always wanted one. But Because I got out of playing in bands. I never thought about getting one. Over the past couple of years. I have gotten more into playing again. So I went for it this past summer and finally bought my 87 "Pointy" and I just cannot put it down.

I love this guitar. So I hope to be able to meet some others that fell like I do about these guitars and learn more about them. Maybe lern more about the other years later on.
I would like to buy more and maybe another bass. I would really love to buy a new SD also. I just found out that they are being MIJ now. It is looking like 1986 all over again at Charvel.

Welcome aboard! That bass looks great. I have a Model 7 in the same finish, and I love how it has aged & gotten to be more of a cream color.

Welcome. Very nice pair you've got there. Looking at your 1986 Model 2B, I want one as well.

                You are in good company.
I had a Model 88 no one could seem to pin down, looked here, and never really left.
The Jacksons are very fine as well!

Thanks guys. The Black Model 2 was the first guitar I bought in 22 years. Yes I am hooked and want more. I play allot more today then I did all through the 90s and 0s. My 15 year old daughter is heavy into Drums and wanting to be in metal bands. So she is the one that kind of fueled me again. We both like the same bands and I cannot keep any CDs I buy. They end up in her room. She also plays guitar, so she gets uses out of these. I also have a 57 Fender Strat I got in 83 and when my sister died in 86. I got her 65 Gibson ES330. That one now belongs to my daughter (Who happens to be named after my sister). Anyways, making a long story ENDLESS! My point is that I have so much enjoyed this Model 2 that I want to start buying up more of them. I love how they play. I LOVE the prices. I love the looks. I have always been a fan of the "Pointy" even when they were "So Uncool, dude." I may also venture into the later ones with the "Blaaa" headstocks (A little tongue in cheek, there). Then maybe one day getting a new one.
I really like the 86-88 Model Series. I do prefer the Model 2. I like the simplicity of them, and I like the more conventional "Strat" body. To me, not that I would not own any, the upper models look a little off to me. The cut a ways or horns look too thin to me. I feel the same with the Basses. But that is all me. Please do not get offended by that if you own these guitars. It is just my personal preference. They are still killer guitar. Do not get me wrong. So it is cool to have a place to BS about these guitars. I was on some general guitar boards. They were great, but I was always hunting for MIJ 80s Charvel players. I found my home. COOL!

Cool bass! Do you mind telling us what you paid for it in 86? Just curious, cos the Model series were high quality and kinda expensive back then, but less than the US version, for sure. My friend paid $400 in '88 for black Model 2 that looked identical to yours...I think he got it from Sam Ash in NYC. The next year in 89 I bought a white Model 2 over the phone from sam Ash paying $150 for it...they apparently bought all the remaining older stock from Charvel since this was when Charvel was transition to the toothpaste logo ones, and Ash blowing them out the door. They had only Model 2's in red and white. In retrospect, I should bought many more back then! BTW, still have the guitar.

Yea, I will try to remember. I seem to recall 600 or 700. I remember that I took a personal bank loan out for it. Remember when banks did that? When I heard about them coming out, I just went to my bank and took a shot. And they said OK!!! LOL! Man I wish they would do that for me today. I really need it. Anyhoo, I wanted a top line bass. was playing out allot back then and it was just getting silly that I always had a cheap 100 dollar bass, and my guitar players would have High dollar guitars. And many of them.
So what color did you get? The white or the Red? When I bought my Model 2 last summer. I was looking for a white one to match my bass. I could not find one at the time. I wanted a model 2. I came across mine and someone had painted it with that stone finish. Oh man it looked BAD, but I have a buddy of mine that is the painter at a high end Hot Rod shop. He said that he could match the paint on my bass and shoot the guitar for me. Well I found that I could scrape that junk off of the guitar and it still have it's nice factory black finish on it. I got it all off and I really liked it. So I kept it black. This is the pic from the e-bay listing.

Mine's white. I think the exact color is called Pearl White. There is a bit of a marbling pearl to it. Over the years, it's more like a cream color now, which I believe is from the clearcoat yellowing with age. I upgraded the hardware and pickup and redrilled a new volume hole further away from the pickup...my only big gripe with j/c's.
