I love the s-s-s layout on those but I don't get the pick guard.

I guess the pickguard is mostly cosmetic.

I saw a few of those in some local pawnshops and every one was butchered to accept a bridge humbucker. I would jump all over a clean one if i saw one.

Reminds me of Jeff Beck's Jackson. Did he not play one like that in the Rod Steward video years ago?

Yes but his is a neck thru 24 fret, theres actually a thread here on JCF thats talks about it, and it has a link to the YT video of Beck jamming.
