Hi, first post here, great forum.
This has probably been asked before, but I want to change the neck on 87 Mod 2, with one of the Charvel Pro Mod So-Cal Necks on e-bay. Has any one done this and what were the pitfalls?

I've done it with a model 3 body and only had to take out some paint from the neck pocket. another board member was not so lucky. the only other issue is you will have to do some adjusting of the bridge.

Bridge adjustment shouldn't be an issue as I put a Floyd Rose tremolo on it several years ago. The seller said the neck was 2.25" so I will have to take some paint off. My measurement of the body was 2.225" So .025" have to come off. Should be able to do it with some light sand paper.

Here it is with a new neck. It was not easy fitting the new neck, a lot of sanding and fine grinding.

Looks good! I plan to do the same with a Model 3 body I bought recently.

I plays great, I noticed the tone is a bit brighter than with the previous neck. The overall sound is excellent. The heel width was larger that the 2.25" I was told it was, and the dimension from the center of the bottom hole to the end of the heel was longer by almost .125" So a lot of slow and steady sanding and fine grinding was required but the result is a great fit, and it looks good.

What happened to the old pointy neck?

I would have left it as is and started a new project.

All neck vary in size. Sellers never take the time to accurately measure. I'd rather have a tight fit with sanding rather than a loose fit and bad tone.

Tricky: I still have the pointy neck. I had it worked on about 10 years ago to add Floyd Rose locking nut, but the guy didn't do a very good job, he didn't wreck it, but I didn't like the fact that he didn't add a block under the Floyd nut, so I had problems breaking strings, I added a spacer to it, to level the strings to the nut. I also have the original Charvel locking nut.

DonP: It is a tight fit and sounds great, sounds better than before, I've had that guitar since new, and it was time for a change. There are quite a few import Charvels for sale up here, so if I get the urge for a pointy head Charvel I can always grab another. This is not the first neck I've done, slow and methodical is the way to go to ensure a tight fit. With the bolts out you can hold up the guitar just by the tight fit. And of course there are no gaps.

Ok, seeing how bad the original neck was I'd say it was a good move.

The old neck is still good, some fret wear, nice and straight, and will work fine with the old locking nut, I just didn't like the design of the old locking nut. Right now its hanging on the wall of my office.
