Yup, the price on things like Model 6s were nearly $1K right?
I'd love my Model 6 to have a 5 way. That's why 650XLs appeal to me, but I'd never get one as they have a recess trem.
Personally I'd go with a good Model 4, as it has a 5 way...and is not neck thru. (Neck thru note articulation is lame IMO)
Any model series you'll get will definitely feel very "80s" in terms of construction, frets etc. (Hard to describe). I'd pick a promod over a Model series now, myself. Good luck in your quest.Last edited by wanthairspray; 03-02-2011, 01:56 PM.

yeah, model 4 doesn't have a 5 way, has the mini's.
There is a 'flawless" model 3 on ebay, but they want a friggin lot for it, $500 or $750 BIN, but it does look mint.
Now THAT one has a 5-way
Think I'm leaning towards the Model 6 anyways, I want neck-through and sharkies.

I like the 86 Model 3 best, for a versatile player. 25.5 scale.
You can find them pretty cheap because of the crappy Kahler 2500 trem,
but you can replace it with the Kahler 2710 for $50-80. Killer trem.
The 2710 is not made anymore, so you have to find a used one.
It is a direct fit, no permanent mode is needed. 86 had a genuine Kahler string lock.
The early (non-covered) j90, and J100 are both very good pickups.
You can still get new Kahler parts through Wammi World.
I don't care for the toothpaste bolt on Dinky bodies, because they tend to be weak in the trem post area & neck pocket. They do have a good Schaller Floyd & locking nut though.
If you want a neck-thru axe with sharkfin inlays and a lot of bling, go for a 650 or 750.
IMO, if you are buying as an investment,
1. 750
2. Surfcaster
3. 5FX
4. Model 88
5. Spectrum
Models
The prudes may snub them, but I don't care.
I dont need furniture.
If its tough, shreds, and screams, Its all good.
If it gets jacked, I'll get another one.
And rock that sucker.

The Model 6 sold for 720. Looks like the prices might be creeping up....
OK, so someone find me a Charvel dammit. I have mama's ok to buy, and that wont last much longer, thats why I am kinda in a rush to find something, lol.
Looking for:
Pointy, not Strat head
HH or HSS
Bolt or Neck through
prefer an 80's model (trying to recapture the essence of my first Charvel that was stolen 20 years ago)
White would be awesome, but any color is ok
NUmber of frets and scale isn't an issue

Rdamaral, I'm gonna have to go with the Model 6
I really like the non-recessed trem - it sits a little higher, almost feels like playing a Les Paul to me. The neck is angled back from the body, also reminiscent of a LP.
The neck itself is amazing, perfectly shaped - it's just a very comfortable, very well-made instrument.

"You could make a Model 6 the last guitar you'd ever buy."
I think he could be right!

I can't comment on the 550xl cos I never played one. The bolt-on toothpaste logos might have a truer recessed floyd height. I'd like to think I like the mojo of the original model series, but honestly, the hardware is better on the toothpaste era.Hail yesterday
