how does the model series compare to the pro mod series?
Very different guitars. The Model 2 is basswood and has a neck with a relatively thin D profile and a poly finish, a rosewood fretboard, and a subpar stock trem. The promod is alder with a 1-piece quartersawn maple neck with a fuller C profile and a gunstock oil finish, and comes with a much better stock trem. I prefer the neck shape of the Model 2, but the promod kicks its ass in every other category, imo.
Problems with Model series (if you can deal or work around these, more the better)
- mini switches
- behind the nut string lock
- Jackson pickups & electronics
- kahlers on '86s and crummy pot metal trems on 87 & 88's
The one I have now has been converted over to a Floyd nut, Floyd and Dimarzios and is a great sounding and playing guitar. Frankly I've got no need for a guitar for which I need to make compromises in order to like.
I love and own some of each, and Id pick the model series if I had to. BEST neck carve, nice poly finish on the neck that I LOVE. Mini switches are a personal prefrence and are only really on the model 4 and 6 anyway, but I personally like them... you can do some cool stuff with em. As far as behind the nut string locks, Ive never had a problem with them. The stock JT6 does kinda suck, but its no worse than the new "licensed" floyd crap thats on every other guitar now a days. Jackson electronics and pickups are some of the best ever made IMO... the JE1200 with a J50BC is just fucking heavenly!
Imagine, being able to be magically whisked away to... Delaware. Hi... Im in... Delaware...
People can dog the JT-6 all day long but I love em'.Never had one not work perfectly.Love the fine tuners on a JT-6.
Jackson pick ups are killer with the mid boost and with out.
The Kahler flat mount and 2500 are great trems too nothing cheap about a Kahler IMO.Nothing wrong with the nut/string locks either never had one not work perfectly.
I'm with RobRR on the neck carve just feels so good.
I've got both - Model 4 and a SoCal. Prefer the SoCal: despite what others have said I don't like the pickups with the active electronics on the Model 4 so much. Personal preference I guess, but I'm just not a fan of active guitars.
The trick with the mid boost is EQ the guitar with the amp first with the mid boost all the way down.
Then as you play bring up the mid boost when you need it.You'll be surprised how it fattens up the singles.
J-200 singles sound flat with no boost true but when you up the boost they sound great
I can't say since I haven't played a pro mod...assuming the OP meant the USAs...but I can't imagine anything beating the model series. Especially anything made in the US these days.
I'd put all the basswood JT6 mini-switch behind-the-nut lock guitars in the world in a pile and set them on fire, and like three JCF'ers would put it out and tell me I'm crazy, which I am, because I could sell them on Ebay for over $9000 each like that alienxnation guy.

I haven't owned a Pro Mod, But have played them. The ones Ive played were USA, and the fingerboards weren't rolled very well. They also had some issues with fret ends.
On one Pro Mod, I could feel the skunk stripe.
I hear the Japan Pro Mod boards are rolled better and the fret ends are good.
The 86 Model 2/3 are my choice because price, neck carve, board roll, I can put a Kahler 2710 on, they have a genuine Kahler string lock, and I like the uncovered pups.
If its in good shape, a Trem swap, shielding tape, and a new jack should make an 86 a damn good shredder for under $350.
They are solid workhorse axes with a fast stable neck.
Models
The prudes may snub them, but I don't care.
I dont need furniture.
If its tough, shreds, and screams, Its all good.
If it gets jacked, I'll get another one.
And rock that sucker.
Quartersawn necks with the best dimensions ever
Basswood about equal to alder in value and IMO, quality (possibly made from "old wood" as well: benefit)
Models 5 and 6 uses poplar if you value such, others offer ash and mahogany (for some of the tele bodies I believe)
Hand wound pickups made in the USA
Some of the finest tight mass manufactured tolerances ever...
Great value if you find one with little wear
This said, I have a model 3 and 6. As mentioned, the toggle switches on the 6 are a quirky design, but they work. The J1200 system is indeed quite nice, and you can get someone to mock that circuit for you if it fails, J50BC and J200s are still available on the bay. I love how both of them play, and I'm considering buying an earlier model 3 with pickguard to make a mutt out of using a newer Charvel pro mod neck (I like the vintage headstock look). They're made in Japan, and current models from other manufacturers that are made in Japan fetch high prices. Sustain on the model 6 destroys any Les Paul I've ever heard, as does string feel.
BTW, the J100 pups in the model 3 are delicious.
Never played a pro mod, sorry. You've obviously been here a while, so I'm sure you're familiar with the audiozone site. So, my reiteration of the above specs might be somewhat superfluous, I just like quoting them because they're quite good.
I had a Model 4, Hated it! mainly because of th JT-6. I wasn't crazy about the electronics either, but I could have lived with that. I don't own a promod yet, but I have played them. Other than the whole "truss rod screw on the wrong end" thing, I'm kinda gassing for a white socal.
