USACG makes some great necks I have several but you will need to sand the notch on the headstock into the proper start ball shape pretty easy to do tho'.
Working on one for a project and going with rosewood or walnut dots on a maple board this time.
      Really? well screw Mark Twain.

The SoCals are routed for HSH, so for an HSS all you need is a new pickguard and pickups.

Sounds nice indeed. I've seen some of the red maple boards with clay dots that look really sweet.

I was hoping someone would say that. I'd consider picking up a parted out one if I could find a neck with Rosewood.

            Xyrium,

I'm currently making a guitar modeled after one of Warren DeMartini's...I bought a Charvel pro mod neck from the ebay dealer listed above...Then I went to http://www.kneguitars.com/kit_bod.php for the body...Mine was "The Warren"...Alder baody, 2 1/4" neck heel pocket, and added a single coil for the neck pickup...Mitch made it about a week, and cost with shipping was $132.00.

I got the body and looked it over. Looked great to me...

These are almost my specs beside the ebony fingerboard and the floyd rose nut...I can say however that the banana neck they made for me was excellent, and worth the price, much better (lighter) than Warmoth.

But, if you order this, you order a mahogany body with contoured heels, and then you paint it, it's gonna cost almost a grand...without hardware.

Very nice price! They seem to have a good selection of strat bodies with common HSS config cutouts
as well. Thanks for the tip!

You're absolutely right. The price escalates quickly. I haven't done any mutt projects before, so I really don't have any donor parts lying around to bring the price down. I suppose I could always wait for CHarvel to make a Wild Card that I like... :\

If you're looking to do it cheap I guess watch reliablefender on Ebay for a body, you could get one painted for about $300 or so I think.

As far as the neck, I don't think that's too outrageous considering all the "extras" you added on. A standard quartersawn rosewood neck with a Floyd setup is about $300. If you could even find a Charvel rosewood neck with a Floyd shelf it would be from a USA and they were somewhat in demand, I am pretty sure it would cost you more than $300.

My hangup on the current Charvel necks was all of the positive statements about them, so I figured I couldn't go wrong. I figured it must be easier to make a body than a neck, at least from a perspective of the parts that impact playing the most.

Of course, with Musikraft, painting is a problem, and the company they recommend charges quite a bit. So, maybe you're right, get a Charvel model 3 body, and slap a Musikraft neck on it and call it a day. I noticed Fender makes a compound radius neck, but only 9.5-12.

Edit: I must have been looking at graphics jobs. The standard colors aren't too expensive actually.
I bought a Musikraft San Dimas neck a few years back. They do offer finishing, but it goes to a subcontractor(who did good work for me). As for the neck, it was a good neck, but out of all the 60+ guitars that I have ever owned, that one was affected by the weather the most. I ended up selling it, even though their "Thin D" profile is better than anything that Warmoth has to offer.

If you do your research on the internet, you will find people both complain and praise the stuff that they have received from Warmoth, Musikraft, and USACG. They are all similarly priced, and for the most part, they all have the same basic options.

Aren't there a few necks from Japan with rosewood? It seems all of the wildcards use them. I suppose you';re right about the price. it would be a new neck, but if I can locate a good donor guitar under $400, I might be in good shape. It seems that rf does have loaded bodies for that price, then I just need the neck...

Thanks Snowblind. I'm sure you're right, essentially ever manufacturer probably puts out a lemon. I'm sure Charvel is no different.

Yeah, I suppose you could get one of those but the logos are color matched to the body. Every one I've seen for sale has been at least $300 though.
