  • FYI Pickup cavity in Pro Mod

So I have a white Pro Mod and decided I wanted some white pickups to match. I took out the JB & 59 and ordered a Duncan jazz and Duncan distortion. The distortion is too fat for the pro mod guitars. The pickup ears are okay however the thickness from the bobbins are higher than the JB & since the pickups are direct mount it will not fit. As I was taking the pickup out of the guitar the damn thing slips out of my and drops on the guitar and puts a nice new beauty mark on it (yes I'm pissed) if you only knew how careful I am with my guitars. Anyway long story short SD are sending me a JB in white at my request. The pickups are brighter than the guitar but I was just aiming for all white.

So if you are thinking about changing out the pickups on the Pro Mod be sure to Make sure the thickness isn't too fat or ears are too long. The cavity is very shallow

Yes the direct mount pickups are special order. I used a white promod body added pickup rings. It looks really ugly underneath from the drilling I did to make the screws and ears fit.

The Duncan Distortion uses a double thick ceramic magnet and spacers compared to a JB A5 magnet.

And this is the big fail of direct-mounting - you're stuck with whatever they routed for.

If you find the JB too bright, try using a 250K volume pot.

I'm not crazy about direct mounted pups but I love my promod as it is, with the JB. Good info. I'm glad I like the JB.

I installed stock creme Dimarzio pups and short Dimarzio creme rings in Japanese direct mount, pro mod bodies and seem to have had no problems as yet. 36th anniversary Pafs in a blue body, AT-1 and the breed neck in a white body and was plannnig on a super distortion and SDS-1 in a dreamsicle. All bridge pups are trem spaced, apart from the distortion as the strings are gibson spaced on the dreamsicle.. There is some room for pup height adjustment it seems with these pups. Only problem is I haven't strung any of them yet. Hopefully I'II get away with the non distortion types as the heights look the same as the USA Pro Mods and they are not overly powerful pups. but you have me thinking now.

Just compared the TB-4 and the Dimarzio Super distortion side by side and the super distortion is about a whole 1/8"+ higher on the coil than the TB-4 JB. However I know the previous owner of the Dreamsicle installed a black SD distortion and it came with a pup ring as standard, so probably a proper pup rout so I
              might be in luck.

What a bugger, never thought about that.

I think the only thing you could do is try to reverse bend the mounting tabs on it to reduce the height and use them with rubber donut spacers or pup rings, but sods law they will probably snap off.

Or buy a small, squat template router bit with a top bearing on it, mask up/protect the top and use the bearing as a guide beneath the paint and rout two small channels for the legs. That is not such a big deal, as you are routing below the paint line.

I know what they were talking about now when they said you need to et the router out on these.

I have a USA Wild Card that I replaced the JB with an EMG. Wow, there isn't much room under the strings now. Talk about getting the full power of a pickup. Ha! It's just enough clearance without issue. Sounds great, actually. Looks funny, though....

My Ibanez RG uses deep routed cavities, simply using longer legs on their p'up baseplate, I threw everything in there from DiM, SD to EMGs without any problems

I just used large flat bottom pilot drilll so that the legs fall down the hole.
you can then fit rings easily and use any pickups.
