Anyone done this? I'm getting ready to do it, currently working on making a shelf for the nut to sit on. Just wanted to get some ideas and heads ups on other's experiences.

The neck angle is going to be a problem and you will have to drill press the Floyd Studs. You are better off going with a Model 2 that has the JT on there. The studs line up perfectly for an OFR or a Floyd Special and the body is routed correctly for the block. You can change out the old locking nut for the Floyd one easily on a Model 2 as well. Plus the neck angle is set for a floating trem. Otherwise you have alot of detailed work ahead of you! Good luck!"Rule number one: In my van, it's Rush. All Rush, all the time. No exceptions. ^ what he said.
Model 2 body is almost a no-work retrofit. The Model 1 will need the trem posts pulled, dowelled, and redrilled. Then you'll need to heavily shim the neck or route the neck pocket. But, that's why Model 2 bodies sell for so much more than Model 1 bodies...The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

Yeah, the nut shelf is about to drive me nuts, and I haven't even got started good with this yet. That being said, I prefer the maple fingerboard over the rosewood on the Model 2's. I had thought about trying to find a Model 2 body to mate up with it, but I'm going to drill this one, I've decided. The biggest thing is not getting in any hurry with it.
Xenophobe what do you mean about pulling the posts? The model 1 is a vintage 6 screw bridge, so nothing I'll have to pull or dowel there, unless I jack up the floyd inserts. Measure 50 times, drill once I say. Thanks, guys.

This should be in the import Charvel section, but been there done that, works great, PITA to do, and hell no I didn't do it, I paid out the ass for it in 1988, but couldn't be happier:

Don't booger up the neck by adding the floyd nut, the after the nut string locks work fine.
The model 1 has a flat neck pocket so you will have to shim the neck.
Fill the vintage six trem screw holes with dowels before you drill out for floyd stud anchors. Please do not route the model 1 body for a recessed tremReally? well screw Mark Twain.

I had a Model 1 fitted with a recessed Schaller trem and locking nut around 91. It cost me a little but the luthier did a fantastic job. I'm not sure if he shimmed the neck or routed the neck pocket but I remember the strings were so low to the top of the guitar. Recessing the trem might have helped with the neck angle issue. He did fab a shelf for the nut...I'd almost say he used ebony for that. It was a small piece of wood. That guitar was the best I've ever owned or played, at any price. I wish I still had it!

The luthier I had do this did gtrbuyers EVH bumblebee 1500. There is a shelf made of ebony under the nut, and it bolts through the back of the neck. I've always been paranoid about breaking it, so it gets treated good. The OFR is recessed, but it has wood screws instead of inserts (ordered directly from Kramer, had to specify the nut too.) There was never an issue with neck angle, and the action is extremely low. I've played and gigged it for 24 years, but it sits a lot now. I've developed a preference for 24 fret neckthrough guitars. Only thing I want next is to refret it with SS."illegal downloading saved people from having to buy that piece of shit you tried to pass off as music" - Nighbat
