I am thinking about not going with actives on this. Any recomendations on a HSH pickup configuration?Last edited by booger007; 10-30-2012, 06:48 AM.1989 Magenta Charvel 650XL (Now my main guitar) , 1989 White Charvel 650XL, 1989 Trans Amber 750 XL, 1989 Cherry Sunburst 750XL Abortion,1990 Jackson soloist ATT pro Trans Red, 1993 Jackson Dinky Std Black with pick guard , 1992 Jackson Stealth Ex repainted, 1994 JDR-94, 1994 JDR-94, 1995 DR3 (Old Main Guitar) trans purple quilted maple picture , 2002 RR5 white and gold, 1988 Model 4 cobalt blue, 1993 Jackson Fusion Std black, 1990's Alvarez Fusion acoustic electric cutaway, 2009 Alvarez AD60ck Koa acoustic electric cutaway. I like this combination because there is very little volume drop between switching to just the single coil pick up.
I do have a set of reflex pick ups in HSH that came with the guitar but with no preamp. Are they worth anything? I am still on the fence on the active vs passive pickups for this. The souless comments on the active pickups really concerns me.
The main thing I am concerned with on the guitar right now is the fingerboard divots. I have never experienced these and while I see some pretty good looking repairs with the dust super glue or epoxy methods I can tend to be a bit anal sometimes and am really a little nervous about this. Part of me just wants to bite the bullet and get a Ebony fingerboard for it since I have never had a guitar with it.
Ill post this in the tech forum as well but does anyone have any comments on the playability and reliability on the sanding dust fill method? How much can be sanded or planed off of a fingerboard. And finally will the compound radius boards that Stew-Mac sells for Fenders work on this guitar?
I'll let everyone know what i find out on Saturday.1989 Magenta Charvel 650XL (Now my main guitar) , 1989 White Charvel 650XL, 1989 Trans Amber 750 XL, 1989 Cherry Sunburst 750XL Abortion,1990 Jackson soloist ATT pro Trans Red, 1993 Jackson Dinky Std Black with pick guard , 1992 Jackson Stealth Ex repainted, 1994 JDR-94, 1994 JDR-94, 1995 DR3 (Old Main Guitar) trans purple quilted maple picture , 2002 RR5 white and gold, 1988 Model 4 cobalt blue, 1993 Jackson Fusion Std black, 1990's Alvarez Fusion acoustic electric cutaway, 2009 Alvarez AD60ck Koa acoustic electric cutaway. If you can utilize the "fill" method then I think you'll be fine, but if you get into replacing the fretboard I think you're gonna find (for most people at least) it cost prohibitive. As far as active pups go, as always it's going to be a matter of personal taste. Some people love them while others despise them. You'll find more choice, options, and tonal flexibility in passives. Plus if you go with actives, your axe not having the preamp in it already is another added expense to consider. In memory of Gary Wright 9/13/2012

Ive experienced that type of wear on a fingerboard. If it really bothers you, its nothing that a fretboard level cant take care of. Pull the frets, leve/re-radius the board, refret. No need to replace the board, at that point youd most likley ruin the neck finish so youd have to consider that as well. Its a shame youre not closer, Id offer to do it for you... Id love to see that guitar restored, was considering it myself but it went for a little more than I was willing to pay.Imagine, being able to be magically whisked away to... Delaware. Hi... Im in... Delaware...

Initially the whole thought was 1000.00 total to spend on it. with that being said I missed the fact that it had the JT6 on it so that is an unplanned expenditure and quite frankly i wanted one so bad I let that cloud my judgement and my initial goal is definitely not attainable. I was also planning on selling the model 4 to recoup sme of the costs but that was really the first guitar that I actually rescued myself so I dont think I can part with it. The pickups I will try to find used and am probably going to buy a gold schaller floyd for it.
So I will see what my guitar guy has to say on saturday and who knows where this leads. And your not too far,I thought UPS went everywhere? LOL
If I was buying to resell i wouldn't be doing it I would just turn around and sell it as is. i just really think and hope it can be an awesome player that I will be able to enjoy and play.1989 Magenta Charvel 650XL (Now my main guitar) , 1989 White Charvel 650XL, 1989 Trans Amber 750 XL, 1989 Cherry Sunburst 750XL Abortion,1990 Jackson soloist ATT pro Trans Red, 1993 Jackson Dinky Std Black with pick guard , 1992 Jackson Stealth Ex repainted, 1994 JDR-94, 1994 JDR-94, 1995 DR3 (Old Main Guitar) trans purple quilted maple picture , 2002 RR5 white and gold, 1988 Model 4 cobalt blue, 1993 Jackson Fusion Std black, 1990's Alvarez Fusion acoustic electric cutaway, 2009 Alvarez AD60ck Koa acoustic electric cutaway. OK, took it to my guitar guy and he is going to remove the frets and relevel the board as RobRR suggested. Then he is going to reroute the added middle pickup route as it is uneven. then he is going to also fill the bridge pickup route just to ad some more meat for the pick up ring screws. Then he is going to make me some custom pickup rings. I am going to order a schaller gold floyd once I know the right nut size as well as gold knobs and tuners and think I will go with my original idea and EMG 81-SA-85
Once it gets back to me I will drop fill the very minor finish flaws and we should be good. I took anoth guitar to him for a level and recrown so he gave me a package deal worse case 250.00
I almost had the fngerboard replaced with a custom inlayed one of my name across the neck since its so tore up anyways. thought that would be kinda cool?
So I will start looking for a nice one now1989 Magenta Charvel 650XL (Now my main guitar) , 1989 White Charvel 650XL, 1989 Trans Amber 750 XL, 1989 Cherry Sunburst 750XL Abortion,1990 Jackson soloist ATT pro Trans Red, 1993 Jackson Dinky Std Black with pick guard , 1992 Jackson Stealth Ex repainted, 1994 JDR-94, 1994 JDR-94, 1995 DR3 (Old Main Guitar) trans purple quilted maple picture , 2002 RR5 white and gold, 1988 Model 4 cobalt blue, 1993 Jackson Fusion Std black, 1990's Alvarez Fusion acoustic electric cutaway, 2009 Alvarez AD60ck Koa acoustic electric cutaway.
