  • NGD - Model 2

    Hey guys,

I just picked up a Ferrari Red Model 2 - all original. The JT-6 is not in the best condition and will likely need to be replaced but the guitar is a great player. I know some people have dropped in OFRs and am wondering if the posts were also changed when doing the switch. Also, I'd like hear about what pickups people gone with on this guitar apart from the J-90C. Pictures will be posted at some point

The OFR will swap in as long as you have the 42mm trem block on it. The 37/32 mm blocks are too short for the top mount. The studs don't have as much of a taper to them as the OFR studs do but Budman from fretsonthenet.com makes ones that screw directly in and sold this issue. Unless you are doing heavy whammy bar acrobatics you wont need them
    It's pronounced soops

as long as its not pooched, I would stick with the J-90C. Like a clearer Duncan Distortion

I had a Model 2 and tried several humbuckers on it: a Dimarzio Super Distortion, a Duncan Custom, an EMG 89... they all sounded OK but in the end I kept coming back to the original J-90C. I think it's Jackson's best pickup and they really sound amazing on these basswood Model series.

The J-90C's low end is really tight no matter how much gain I throw at it. I love that but it's a little thin sounding otherwise. Maybe I should try a 250K pot.

              Congrats on the M2!

I've had a few of them, all with different pickups like:
              SD Pearly Gates
              SD JB
              Dimarzio X2N
              Jackson J95
              Jackson J90
All kicked azz & had their place, just depends what style of music and tones your looking for.
Of all the Charvels, the M2's are my go to metal guitars.

+1 That J90 is a great metal pickup
How did the "Custom" sound in your M2?

Funny thing. Last night, I attempted to swap out the stock pot for a 250K but didn't take the precaution of making sure it would fit before desoldering everything. I wound up having to put the old one back in and, for whatever reason, it sounded much better. The sound was nowhere near as thin and fizzy. Maybe a bad connection or something. For now, the J90-C stays. I couldn't be happier about that. The Floyd is definitely going to go, however.

Thanks. I'm pretty psyched to own one again. I bought one brand new in '88 but wound up having to sell it a few years later, unfortunately. It was always my intention to get another one and here we are.

It was great too, but I find the J90C a bit more aggressive. I love it!

Yeah, those old J90's are tuff to beat sometimes.
