  • Really unhappy with J90C output

I had this put into my Model 6 ages ago and before I bought it all I ever heard was that its one of Jacksons highest output humbuckers but compared to my bill lawrence 500xl's in my RR1 its output is more medium to low output.

Could it be dodgey wiring in my Model 6 from the guitar tech?

It's became my pickup of choice. I try to pick them up when I can or trade for them. Mine all sound meaty and mean. I would check the wiring.
I have a Jackson and a Charvel and I play one in each hand.

That doesn't sound right. Does the model 6 still have the mid boost in it. Like Dark side said the j90c was Jacksons highest output pickup at the time so it should get the job done nicely. Does sound like bad wiring to me
      It's pronounced soops

Nah the midboost was taken out when i had EMG's put in it.

could the pots be doing it?

Should the J90c be as close as possible to the strings? Eyeballing it n the gap with the last fret pressed down is pretty big

My SDK has a J-90C and as much as I've thought about putting in a Duncan SH-6, I can't pull the trigger because the J-90C seems to do fine. I'm running mine fairly close to the strings.
Any way you could possibly put more shit into your sig?

              I have a j90c with a 1200midboost (one pickup, 18volt).
I loved it for 27 years (and counting?).

However, I find it to be not as impressive with my newer gear.
When I play it through my old setup, I still love it. So I know its not wearing out. But I don't get as much 'uumph' when I use it with newer stuff.
Volume. Tonality. Clarity. All gone. The effect of the midboost when on new stuff, non existent.

Admittedly, this new stuff that I picked up is still in the testing and tweeking phase, so maybe I just need to work out some settings. But new stuff (computer type gadgets) seems to turn that pickup in to an average sounding pickup. Sometimes just downright nasty.

My J90C in my Model 3 measures just short of 16k resistance

Its awesome, as good as, or better than a Duncan JB IMO

Ohm it out at the other end of the guitar cord and report back.

Yeah turn the volume all the way up, plug in the cord, and check the resistance with an ohm meter across the tip and shield

May be a little low on the J90C reading

According to old Charvel Info, pickups should be........

                          J90C - 15.93kOhm

                          J200 - 11.65kOhm

                          Its all right here

Mine sounds great through Amplitube on my phone, I wasn't thrilled with it through the Tube Works pedal I have but the on board distortion of my Fender Frontman 65 sounds nice. The Model 6, PS-3T and Les Paul sound great through the Tube Works and not so hot through the amp's distortion.

If you are using the EMG pots there is your problem you need a 500k pot.
                              EMG pots are 25k
                              Really? well screw Mark Twain.
