  • Does a Gotoh Floyd fit a Mexican San Dimas?

I really like the guitar, and might just put a proper bridge on it BEFORE the stock one breaks.

I have used both OFRs and Gotohs, and honestly don't have a preference between the two. I can get the Gotohs cheaper, so will go that route IF it fits, but if not I'll just go for the OFR, not a big deal. So, does the Gotoh fit the recessed route of the San Dimas or not?

Why do you think the MIK OFR will break? It's a pretty solid unit. I mean, it's not a FR Special or cheap licensed copy. I'd put it at a close second behind the MIG OFR.

+1. I've been using the MIKs for a while now and they're darn good. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy one separately but I wouldn't go out of my way to replace one either.

FR Special is MIK and also a solid unit.

        From the FR Site

"Featuring the same dimensions and specifications of the Original, the Korean-made Special Series features high quality zinc alloy parts."

FR special zinc alloy parts = lower quality, stuff that will actually break over time.

OFR (both MIG and MIK) have hardened steel parts, top notch quality.

I'd say you'd probably have to test fit one before knowing. I'm not sure about the MIM Charvels, but I have a USA CS Charvel with the recess, and a Gotoh fit perfectly.

Thanks for the replies. I think it is a Floyd Special on the Mexican ones. It works fine, but I don't think it feels as solid as a proper Floyd. And on my second Charvel that I bought used it already seems a bit worn, even though it's also a quite new (MIM).

As the guitar feels like a keeper, and a real Floyd doesn't cost that much, and the guitar was pretty cheap anyway...

Anyhow, I found a good deal on the Schaller Lockmeister, so I think I'll go with that. It's basically a Schaller branded original Floyd (NOT the same as the "classic" Schaller Floyd). http://www.schaller-electronic.com/h...er-tremolo.htm

No, the Mexican import Charvels have the FR 1000 series. That's the Korean Original Floyd Rose, same design and materials as the MIG OFR. So, unless someone swapped the bridge before you bought it, that's not a Floyd Special.

In my experience, the differences have been very minor. Basically, on the MIK version, the fine tuners feel a little tighter and the trem am feels a little looser.

                  It says Special here: http://www.charvel.com/guitars//sear...tno=2966000512

That's just a typo on Charvel's website for specs. Look at the overview tab, where it states it's a Floyd Rose Original. They also have it correct on the specs for the SoCal version. It's the FR 1000, MIK Original Floyd Rose. No worries.

I really love the Gotoh. I believe it is a drop-in replacement for the OFR BUT may not fit if it's recessed. Also note that the locking screws sticking out the back are angled down, which may be another issue for recessed bodies...and it makes it impossible to install a d-tuna. None of which were issues on my M3.
