Those nuts didn't require a regular nut. It looks to me that someone removed some of the fretboard and that nut is mounted there to compensate for the missing section. Check the distance from the center of the 1st fret to the edge of the nut. It should be 1 17/16" from the edge of the nut to the center of the 1st fret. That nut DOES NOT need a regular nut in conjunction with it like the original style Kahler nuts did. Seriously, it looks like someone removed material from the board creating that gap. Check it.

Judging by the missing part of the fretboard and the two screw holes, I'd bet someone had a Wilkinson style roller nut on there at one time.
I've seen them installed with the screw holes flipped up front on guitars with steep neck angles. It does require cutting into the fretboard to make them work.

Or one of these.

Here is a better view of the situation. Looks like part of the fretboard was removed. It also looks like that Kahler unit acts as it's own nut like Plon says, considering the grooves for the strings are already there. Can i put some kind of nut spacer thingy in there to fill the gap though? Distance to the first fret is 1 7/16.

Those Kahler nuts actually did have the 3 separate pads. That bar looks to be some sort of improvised hold down.

That Kahler nut was the proper nut for those at that time. You could always fill that gap with scrap rosewood or just leave it if it doesn't bother you. As long as the edge of the nut is 1 7/16 (yes, I put down the wrong distance in my original post) to the center of 1st fret, you're good.

You can fill it with another piece of wood.
The distance from the face of the nut to the first fret should be 1.43" (36.3mm) on a 25.5" scale guitar.Last edited by rjohnstone; 10-18-2016, 03:06 PM.-Rick

That is setup for coil tapping on the humbucker.
Use this and just remove the tone pot.
