  • 1986 Model 4 Question

Can I use the same pups that are in it if I remove the midboost circuitry? Ideally I would still keep the switches but make two tone knobs and one volume. I assume I'll need to change pots to 250k or 500k...

Also, what other pickup options do I have for the single coils? There isn't a lot of space there...

i apologize if this has been asked before. The search function isn't working at all for me.

The general consensus is the J200's don't sound good without the active electronics system. I tried one in one of my passive setups and it indeed sounded like ass. The J50 should be fine.

why on earth would you take out the mid boost? But yes the pickups will work with out the mid boost. sound good, probably not. the humbucker may be ok, but the volume will be low.

I don't really like the sound of any of the pickups all that much and wasn't sure if this would change that. Im going to have to swap them all out because I love the guitar. Just not sure what I'll use for single coils.

J-100's are really REALLY good single coils. Glassy cleans with a clear, but fat bottom end that really transfers well to overdrive tones.

Was suggesting J-100's as a possible replacement. I'm thinking that there's something awry with your active circuit if you're really that dissatisfied with the tones you're getting. The 50BC as well as the J-200's when used with the boost of the circuit are pretty fucking good pickups lol

I don't know. It seems like it's working properly but when I use it with the single coils they almost break up slightly. As if I'm adding overdrive to the amp.

Agreed. The J-100s came stock in my Charvel Model 1C and they're killer. Here is NeoGeoFanatic's demo of his Charvel Model 1A, which comes loaded with three J-100s.

Yeah that's a great demo. I have J100's in my M3 and am not planning on replacing them. Great SC's.

So I just found out j200 are humbucking and j100 are single coil. Explains MUCH of my discontent with them. If I get some J100s, would I just wire them the same way the J200s are currently wired?
