Screamin' Demon. I've got one in my 1A right now and it completely rips.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Bill Lawrence L500XL. This pickup screams. YOu can get them direct for under 50 bucks. (At least I think you can still get tham that cheap). Bill and his wife are great to deal with as well.

I second the Screamin' Demon. Had it in my model 4 for a while and it sounded great. THen I put it in my EPI LP and it freakin' tears your face off! It is my favorite passive pickup currently, followed closely by DImarzio Super 3's.

Personally, I'd put a Distortion in there, best metal riffing pickup ever.

I have an 81 in my Model 1. I love EMG pickups, but I think the 81 isn't the best option...to my ear it doesn't clean up well at all. Now distorted and rawking it's awesome...but if you want any flexibility I'd reconsider. YMMV....

My model 1 was my first guitar...I took the original J90C out and took it apart to see how a pickup worked...I was going to put an EMG in her then, back in 1988 or so, but I was pretty clueless and messed that up. I ended up buying a J89 (???) I think it was from the local music shop and had a friend solder that in for me. Fast forward to 2000 and I finally installed that EMG 81. Like I said in a previous post, I don't like it in this particular guitar, so instead of putting that J89 back in I got me a J90C from ebay...now I just need to install that 90. Not only was my model 1 my first guitar, I also practiced modding on her too...what a great guitar....
