Re: Jt6 to Floyd swap

As soon as I find an OFR, I'll be swapping out the JT6 on the reverse head soloist I just scored off of eBay. At first, I thought "this is no big deal. I can live with this trem", but then I set the guitar up. JT6 = crap. The one thing that will be a little bit of a pain for me is replacing the string clamp behind the nut with a locking nut. I wouldn't have even considered keeping that, but I couldn't even fit a truss rod key underneath it to adjust the neck. I had to grind it (the wrench) down to get it to fit. What a bad set up.

I assume you are talking about the Kahler style lock behind the nut. Those work just as well as a floyd nut I see no reason to change that. Not that cutting a ledge for the floyd is hard just unesessary
Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Well, I'll have to see how it works, but I've had Kahler type string locks in the past and have had tuning problems after dive bombs. I'll have to try this one out. Plus it is a royal pain in the ass to get the truss rod wrench under it.

A good test for Kahler nuts (and the like) is to put your fingers on the strings between the tuners and the clamp. Divebomb the strings and if you feel the strings slacken at all above the lock, it isn't doing its job. Often the locking pieces need to be flipped over inside or changed to get a good lock on the strings.

Interestingly, on a Model 4 I picked up a few months ago, the locking nut itself was worn out and grooved rather than the lock blocks. I'm guessing the blocks were harder than the nut on that one - end result was I needed to replace the whole assembly.

Thanks Jim. I'll give it a try.

Is it hard to say, "not for sale"?

no.

I have been looking for that guitar for a long time, it would be foolish for me not to at least try.

It's probably quite a bit a easier than say... Posting it in the classifieds.

People asking to buy is one of my biggest pet peeves about posting pictures of guitars. From my site, I've received e-mails from people asking to buy some of my guitars. I guess to some people it's worth a try, but to me it's an annoyance. I guess it's just that I'm too passive when it comes to buying. If I see something is for sale and I have the $$, I'll go for it. Otherwise I can wait.

Yep...thats what you have to do. A lot of my mutt stuff was either from eBay parts or whole guitars that I swapped parts around on. I'm one of those that likes to change things around and make them unique to some extent.

I do like the white body and maple neck look tho

I have a bunch of parts laying around to build some more but I got burnt out on working on guitars, refinishing them etc, I actually just want to play guitar now so I have a lot of project stuff on hold
