• Charvel Help

Hello All,

I could use some help. I just purchaced a Charvel Model 3DR.

The guitar is like brand new. I bought it from a local guitar shop that had it stored away in the back of his shop in the case. He never sold it to anyone. I love the guitar it palys great. My question is I would like to know what year it is and the proper color name?

The guitar is a pink metallic. I removed the neck and on the inside of the body of the guitar where the neck goe's is STAMPED "3DR-7" The dealer said it was a mid to late 80's guitar. Doe's anyone know the year an color of this guitar? Doe's the 7 mean 1987? I would appreciate any help.

Thank you

The name of that color is "Burgundy Mist." As for the year, Model Series guitars were made from '86-'88. If it has a Kahler trem, it is an '86. If it has the JT-6 licensed Floyd trem, it is an '87 or '88. I seem to recall reading that the 3DR was only made toward the end of the Model Series run ('88 only?) and then went on to become the Predator model, but one of the experts will have to confirm that. Congrats on a great score, and welcome to the board! Post some pics if possible!

I believe the 3DR came out in the fall of '88. There is a full page ad of it in a Guitar Player from that time period which I have. I actually had it scanned at a friend's. I'll see if I can find it and post it here. Beginning in '89 they switched to the toothpaste style logo and it became the Predator.

Sounds like a cool find!

Hello all,

Thank's for your help.

Our you sure on the color "Burgundy Mist."? My guitar is a dark Pink Sparkel color. I don't have a digital camera. But I have a 35 mm. I will take some pictures and have them processed than scan and post them on this site.

Yup, Burgundy Mist. Sounds like a wine cooler. Maybe that's what they were drinking when they came up with the name. Hey, it was the '80s, whaddaya gonna do?

Re: Charvel Help

Burgundy Mist was a popular color in the 50's on GM cars. A friend of mine has a fully restored '59 Oldsmobile rocket 88 and the original paint for his car was Burgundy Mist. It looks just like the Charvel model colors.

My guitar doe's have the JT-6 licensed Floyd Trem. So I guess it is 1987 or 1988? How about the stamp on the neck pocket 3DR-7. What do you think that 7 means?

Thanks again

The model 7 (which also has a reversed headstock) came with an optional rosewood fretboard.

Hello,
Im confused. I have a model 3DR. What do you man by model 7?
On my guitar Charvel Model 3DR ther is a stamp on the guitar body neck pocket. I had to remove the neck to see the stamp"3DR-7" I am trying to find out what the -7 means and what DR stands for?

Thanks again

Re: Charvel Help

All the 7 means is the neck is also used on the Model 7's, too. They were also reversed.

the general consensus in this thread seems to be that the 3DR was only available in '88
