Re: surfcaster score

Could be mod because the stock model never came with Dimarzio and I am not even sure if the guitar originally had lipstick pickup in the neck position.
How would the Dimarzio single sized neck pickup would fit perfectly in there?
Maybe this has a new pickguard someone made it.
There is one one GMW website that has custom pickguard on.

Look at the closeup of the headstock. See the space between the nut and the truss rod cover? May be a modded nut.

Great score! I've been wanting a 2 x Lipstick for over a year, but they always seem to show up in that seafoam greenish color (turquoise?) and bring silly amounts of $$$.

Looks sweet! Congrats! BTW, that's a funky lookin bridge! Is that a tremolo or is it fixed?

Re: surfcaster score

The bridge looks like a tremelo to me because of the two posts and the hole for the trem bar. But I have been wrong before.

it's a tremolo...it looks like the trem that was used on the 2 lipstick version.

Re: surfcaster score

It is a funky Gotoh trem. I have a sea-foam green surfcaster with the same bridge. And god help you if you ever lose the bar for it.

I also had one in this color once, but sold it to a local bro. Trans-orange over flamed maple. Looks way cool!

Re: surfcaster score

Not sure on a replacement. Check the stud spacing. Plus, the trem area is routed down to follow the shape of the funky trem.

The bar is a pop in variety, so that will narrow it down. Start looking for any kind of pop in bars you can find and try them. I have the one for my green rig, but the trans axe I sold my bro did not have the bar.

I wonder if Budman could fashion one?? I'd be willing to send him mine to use as a guide. Then he would be able to corner the market on surfcaster trem bars!

Re: surfcaster review

well, got the surfcaster today. it is in decent shape, a little more banged up than i like but cool none the less. the guitar has been modded quite a bit. used to have a roller nut, now has a white plastice nut. the pickups are a dimarzio SD in the bridge and a fast track 2 in the neck. the neck pickup is tapped with a push/pull control on the tone pot. the bridge pickup has a 3 way mini switch to select the coils. very vesatile and has a lot of sounds available. it has a custom pickguard. the guitar was originally a 2 lipstick version from '92.

the guitar is light weight (it's a lot smaller than i thought it would be) and very comfortable. it has easy access to the highest frets, which are rather small. the neck is really comfortable, thin and flat compared to newer jacksons. the kluson type tuners actually work rather well. the body is bound on the top and around the cat-eye cutout. speaking of the cutout, i thought the guitar would be more like a true semi-hollow but it's not; the only hollow section is where the cutout is, and you can even the "walls" if you poke your finger in there.

the trem has been blocked. the previous owner glued a piece of mahogany (same as the body wood) in the cavity, so no trem work on this one!!

i bought this guitar for a kinda jazzmaster vibe, and i was planning on changing the pickups to a gibson P94T in the bridge and a lace-sensor gold in the neck. well, after plugging it in, i'm not changing anything!! i play surf music with my brother occasionally, and after plugging this into a fender reverb unit then into my '63 tremolux head, all i can say is WOW. with the 2 pickups split, and on together i've got a great spring reverby twang going. exactly what i wanted!!

plugging into my rivera s120 and hitting the OD channel with the pickups in their humbucker mode, all i can say is WOW!! the sound is thick and super fat. you can tell the "hollow body" difference even with that tiny little cutout. man, this thing is about as thick as my 93 hamer special with P90's.

i am VERY pleased and it was a good $300.00 spent. this charvel is amazing and i can't believe they never really caught on. this one is a keeper!!

Thanks so much for the review bro. I've been thinking about these alot lately. As for the hollow body issue. Aren't these chambered bodies? I could have sworn I read that these were chambered so there maybe more "hollowness" than you think? Maybe by tapping the surface with your knuckle you could here a tone difference across the surface of the body? Great review bro!

Hey Dave...

What about the trem bars? Can you make replacements if you have one to use as a guide? I'd send you mine to use if you want. Then, for all future surfcasters that are missing the bars, you will be the man!
