This guitar confuses me quite a bit. Everything I've ever read says the model 5A was 1988 only. But this is clearly a 1987 guitar. The other thing is that it having a serial number on the back of the head stock would mean that it was built at likely the very beginning of the year 1987 as they quickly transitioned to stamped serials at the last fret.
Does that make this guitar a prototype to the 5A? Why would they have waited so long after making one up in early 87, to release until 88? Wouldn't that make this guitar a fair bit more valuable to the right collector? OR could it just be a weird Japan market only version until 88 when they released world wide - so not even technically a 5A?
