  • Model 6 mod question

Is it possible to change the Kahler style string lock with a Floyd lock nut?? Is there enough shelf to do such a thing professionally and not cobbled together? Hahaha/

No, most people make a little triangle of wood and glue it in place

the nut on a six or and older model series is at the end of the board. It's not hard but you have to do some sanding and filing maybe paint the wedge if it bothers you.
I know the old saying that the value of an opinion is generally inversely proportional to the strength with which it is held.

You would think someone makes these thing Maybe fretsonthenet if he is still in business? I just make or already have my stuff. He did make quit a few thing for the model series. Anyway you can see a little wedge on the bottom of the nut, it's painted black but you can see it. There's some steps to get to that point. remove both nuts, check how wide your new nut will be, measure from your nuts gap on finger board out to that nut width then make youre wedge what you need it then it sanding and gluing and checking often.

I've bought quite a few parts off Dave at Frets On The Net over the past couple of years. He's still in business. As far as I know he doesn't do the Floyd lock nut shelves. There is a guy on either the Charvel or maybe the JCF Facebook page that is making them. I'm a purist and think replacing the factory sting lock detracts from the value of them. I've never had any problems with my Kahler behind the nut lock nuts over the past twenty years so I don't find the mod worth the time, effort or money to undertake myself especially if the Kahler lock nut is in good working order.

Me either. I might buy new blocks for them but I've had a string break after the kshler, and it was still in tune. I could do it no problem but most of my crap that I have is worth too much money or to rare to be fucking with

only problem I've had with behind-the-nut locks is on my last build, the clamp doesn't seem to hold the g-string in tune, no matter how tight I clamp the bolt. I think I might need to rough up the lock with some steel wool or something.

I've had a couple of strings slip over the years due to the sting blocks needing replaced. Nothing that can't be fixed quick and easy.

these are brand new blocks, hence me thinking they might be too smooth.

                oh yeah, it's a 0.022 plain

Only time I have had trouble with a behind the nut lock, Is when some hack replaced the nut and the string slots put one of the strings out on the edge of the lock block and it would not pinch the string. this was also a Jackson lock not a Khaler. how ever A good setup is important for these to work as good at staying in tune as a locking nut.

The rare Kahler nut is a little thinner than an OFR nut, so that may be easier to do.

I'd consider doing this on a keeper.

And then again, that's why we have the 275, 375, 475, 550XL, 650XL etc. guitars to go for. Toothepaste logo doesn't bother me.

I love the toothpaste logo as well.

This model 6 is certainly a keeper....in mint shape and plays like a mf'er.

Will the Gotoh GE1996T be a direct drop in for the JT6?? I have a line one for a great deal and I know I like them as i have had several guitars with this particular trem. Thanks!

                            A Model 6 has a top mounted Floyd. You'll need a 42mm block.
