• What makes a rare 750xl?

Guitar Geek's thread about his 750xl being made from basswood got me thinking. Put that one aside as I'm talking about colors, trems, etc. What would the least produced 750xl be? I've heard that the string thrus were produced less than the Floyds. I've also heard that cherryburst was the most common transparent finish, while blue and red were a little less common. So what would it be?

I've got a cherryburst string thru 750xl. Were there more or less of these than other finishes?

I can't seem to recall seeing many of the string throughs in a solid color. I've never seen a magenta, desert crackle, or turquoise string through, but I haven't been at this as long as many others here. Desert crackle has to be pretty rare, trem or not.

Here's the list of colors from the '89 catalog. Don't know why they called it trans purple. It always looks blue to me.

The blue...err...Trans Purple seems to be the least common of the trans finishes. But I've never seen a crackle, magenta, or turquoise.
750xl, 88LE, AT1, Roswell Pro, SG-X, 4 others...
Stilletto Duece 1/2 Stack, MkIII Mini-Stack, J-Station, 12 spaces of misc rack stuff, Sonar 4, Event 20/20, misc outboard stuff...

Why do I still want MORE?

Those were my thoughts exactly.

Wasn't there a dark green metallic finish, as well? I seem to recall a 750xl finished that way, though maybe that was just a metallic black guitar poorly photographed.

You don't see many platinum or white 750s, either.

I've seen a couple of white ones, and only one platinum.

Well - that's about as turquoise as mine is purple...

I'll bet that is the turq.

That is so cool, Dave! It's amazing how many quirky things surface with J/C guitars. Is Platinum the color we always call Silver Sparkle? The two I know I haven't seen are the Desert Crackle & Turquoise. I've seen those on the 550 & 650, but not the 750. Here's the turquoise color on a 550:

I remember Pete had tracked down a NOS Silver Sparkle 750 & I was hoping he'd get it just so we could see the pics. That color must look so good on a carved top. He said someone grabbed it for like a grand. If I ever find a 750 that needs a refin, I'd like to send it to this guy down in Chapel Hill who does some amazing metal-flake paintjobs. I'd get it done in gold.

Check out this LP he did :

is it possible the dark green was a new colour introduced in '90? Anyone have the '90 catalogue?
