can someone help me out? model 6 vs 650XL?

I am looking to get a back up to my SL-2H and was told that for the money the model 5 or 6 or the 650xl is a real good axe?
I am on a limited budget and need something great for under $500?
i was thinking of this one?

The import Charvels from 1986-1991 were great guitars. Unless someone dragged it behind their truck, it should be a great guitar.

That's a 650xl. Awesome guitars. I'v egot one and it is a tone monster. All my other guitars must measure up to it. You should be able to get a clean one for $400. $300 if you're patient and lucky.

what is the main differences between the 650xl and the model 5 or 6?

The model 6 had the Guitar shaped logo, JT-6 trem (86s had a Kahler), and three on/off switches. The 650xl had the toothpaste logo, Schaller trem, and a 5 way switch. Otherwise, they are pretty much identical. The 650xl and later 650 Custom was just an updated Model 6.

Biggest thing I see is the 5-way blade pickup switch selector on the 650 vs. the 3 mini-toggles on the model 6

My 650's got EMGs and a push pull coil tap switch on one tone control. Would they have been a factory fit? Looking at the wiring they look like a pro job.

No. Emgs were not used in these Charvels.

the trem on the 650 is a much better system I had a 650xl in silver metalflake over 8 years ago wish I never sold it
