It's slanted that way to accentuate the highs and give the lows a smoother character to it. With the lower register of the pickup being more towards the mid/neck, you would gain some of that smoothness and thickness at the sacrifice of a little bit of the bridge bite. Vice versa for the treble side.
...Also has the advantage that the original Jackson pickup´s poles then surround the strings, less dropouts and (theoretically) a bit less pull from the pup [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]
