• Heavy guitars...

Pete mentioned how heavy a 750XL can be in another thread here and he reminded me of someone I met last week.

There was this guy my uncle knew who was really smart but bummed around playing in bands here and there and never kind of grew up. I took about 2 or 3 lessons from him over 10 years ago when I was just starting out. Didn't learn anything I remember or use today.

Anyway, I do remember he played a Charvel back then, and I used to bring my 750XL, which I thought was just the bees knees of Charvels of course. My memory is hazy but he more than likely had a Model 2 or something, I don't think it was a USA.

I saw him at a gig last Friday and said Hi, remember me, blah, blah. He still has the same Krokus haircut he's had forever. He also used to see me play in a Kiss covers band so it had been a while. I asked him about his guitars and how it was going and he said he was playing an Ibanez Sabre these days. Ok, how was the Charvel, where was it, why did he stop playing it? Well, he still has it somewhere, he loved the thin neck on it, but it was TOO HEAVY for when he was playing!!!

Puh-lease, I couldn't beleive it. In the Kiss covers days I used to play four sets with a LP, no problem, until the day I tried to use a strap like Slash's, boy did that suck, went back to a big, full one right away. Did a lot of gigs with the 750XL too, they're not that heavy, a lot of wood is routed for the Floyd, lol....

A LP for four sets would hurt right now, but you get used to it. Maybe when the Sabre gets too much this guy can get a Parker or something....

Great story - but what the hell is a Krokus haircut?

Yeah, it's tragic, tragic hair on this guy. We christened him the Wrist Flicker cause when he would dance when I was in the Kiss band, he would do this funny thing and flick his wrists, sort of Elaine style, but it was only the wrists, not the whole body heave. He did it again last Friday so it brought back memories for a few of us.

I'm 5'7", 150lbs, and I'll have my Soloist on at band practice for four hours straight. That guy needs to get the sand out of his crotch and be a man.

Try a 13lb modded strat with a Northern Ash body...by third set my shoulder would be wanting a break.

My 86 model 3A weighs in at a whopping 10.2lbs. I would have thought that with the swimming pool route and pick guard it would have been my lightest but is the heaviest Charvel I own.

                        I like heavy guitars.

IMO, light guitars dont feel like they are "all there", like something is missing or something.

For me it can depend on my mood or whim. Some that are light are very resonant that they 'come alive' acoustically. You can feel the notes, especially on feedback. But heavy guitars are cool too. I have a new fav that is a strat body of all maple and a maple neck with ebony board, brass V trem. It is a very heavy guitar and has alot of unique tone and sustain. My schecter seven weighs quite a bit as well.

Charvelguy, that sounds almost as heavy as my PC Archtop. Maple neck-thru, maple body, ebony board. The thing feels heavier than my Les Paul. I don't actually know how much it weighs because I respect it's privacy.

My Washburn 7 string is pretty heavy. I can't play standing up for longer than an hour because my shoulders start to cause severe pain
