  • Cracks in Charvel neck pockets

Is this a fairly common problem? I have a 475 that has some pocket cracks, doesen't bother the guitar at all.

But I have seen quite a few Charvels with this problem. What are your thoughts on this?

The cracks are typically in the corners, and they are usually cracks in the finish, not the wood. I see these cracks on many bolt-on guitars of various manufactures...they don't bother me at all.

Could the cracks be a result of the necks being taken off alot?

My 475 has had cracks almost since new. This is a common occurrence on any bolt on guitar. I remember reading complaints on the Anderson guitar forum. Tom said there is not much that can be done if you want a tight fit in the neck pocket. My Suhr has a tiny crack in the neck pocket and it has barely been played. John Suhr said he has been routing the neck pocket slightly bigger because of complaints about the cracks. In most cases they are just finish cracks.

It has something to do with the guitar being assembled without giving proper time for the finish to cure. Yes, its dry when assembled, but its just not "cured" which takes much longer.

Re: Cracks in Charvel neck pockets

                i have a question...

i have this rad looking Fusion Custom (Charvel), but during shipping, the pocket and neck stressed, i guess, and it has like a 2 cm wood crack.

it doesn't look too nasty, but its kind of a case queen because i'm worried about the crack. Is it anything to worry about? Should i feel comfortable playing it? after seeing Vai's Evo neck cracks, i got kinda paranoid.

would the axe be ok? I feel bad, its a hell of a player, but the crack really throws me, and the heel has less wood than my strat, so what should i do? there isn't any way to make sure the crack spreads is there?

thanks a lot guys for the responces!

You could get a syringe (know any diabetic people?) and pump some glue down into the crack, I think that would go a long way.
