• Questions about the 650XL

So I hear these are great guitars and I might be considering one. A few questions:

- They have a rosewood board right, what about the neck and body?
- Are the inlays MOP or plastic?
- Can the Shaller floyd be replaced with a ORF without any mods?
- Can somebody post a pic of the back of one please.

Thanks!

- yes, rosewood fretboard which I actually prefer over ebony, the neck is maple thru poplar wings
- MOP
- I believe so
- I don't have a picture of the back of mine right now. I'm at my parents' house until tomorrow evening so I can't take one and have it uploaded for you until then. Maybe someone else can help out with that.

The neck is maple and the body wings are poplar. Actually, the rosewood on mine's fretboard looks so dark that some people mismatch it as ebony :-)

Nice quote from the '89 catalog there, OJD.
"Got a crazy feeling I don't understand,
Gotta get away from here.
Feelin' like I shoulda kept my feet on the ground
Waitin' for the sun to appear..."

Yes, but you will have to get an Original Floyd with the long sustain block, as the trem on the 650xl is NOT recessed, even though it is routed out behind the trem to allow for radical pull-ups with the bar.

Can you please explain the diffrence between recessed and "routed for radical pull ups"
I guess that´s the same as my 375?
What´s the pro´s and con´s between recessed and this way?

Re: Questions about the 650XL

On a recessed trem the post bushings are set in the recessed area of the route, so the string height at the bridge is lower, and there is no need for a 4 degree neck angle. On a trem routed for extra pull-up clearance, the post bushings are set flush with the top of the guitar just like any other non-recessed trem. I prefer non-recessed, mainly because that's what I've been playing since the late '80s and I'm used to the height of the bridge and the angled-back neck.

There's really no extra sustain in neck-thru construction compared to set-neck or bolt-on construction. And what kind of warmth are we talking about with a maple neck? A maple neck that's through the body will actually be brighter than a bolt-on or set neck.

Yep, I think the continuation of the "neck-thru = sustain for days!!!" myth can be blamed mostly on whoever writes the copy for catalogs & GC/MF circulars.
