• Model 88 failure (Pics inside)

Ok, well most of you might remember I got a Model 88 from Dana (guitarforceone) some time ago. It was in horrible condition so he gave me a very nice deal on it. Here are a few pics of it before:

You can see the original neck in the picture which had a headstock break right through the middle of it. It's doweled and strong as hell but I ended up not using it because someone actually had an original 88 neck for sale right here on the forum! I feel like a shmuck because I can't remember the original seller

I actually missed the sale because Brian (swillmaster) beat me to it but out of the kindness of his heart, he let me buy it. What are the chances of finding a neck to a Model 88? Amazing, I tell you!

The reason I say it's a failure because I tried 3 attempts at "bursting" it but I just couldn't get the finish I like. I'm sure I'm being overly critical but I just wasn't happy. I stripped her back down and said, screw it, I've been wanting an oiled mahogany body for awhile now so I went and tried it. May I say that this thing is gorgeous just the way it is!!

I cleaned up the neck (and I'm still going to oil the back of it) but I finished the body and couldn't wait to get her back together. It has a J95 which is the original pickup for this model and a BEAUTIFUL JT6 that I ran across. I just have to wire her up, intonate and give it a setup, and she'll be good to go.

    some pics!

Thanks so everyone that helped me with this one, you guys are amazing.......

Awesome job! I was telling my wife last night how much I hate the flame job I painted on my 88, and decided I was going to strip it and just oil the body. Then I see this thread - how many fingers am I holding up, Dave?

What do you recommend for stripping the paint off and what type of oil did you use? I gots to know.

I was the neck source. Now how's about selling the whole guitar back to me?

Wow that looks great. I'm a fan of the 88's, and it's nice to see one that was whipped brought back to life. Budman - what serial # is that one...?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I didn't wait for all of the pics to download with my archaic dial-up service before I asked...

                            Failure?!

That thing looks a lot better than the bursted 88's (which look like old, tired granny furniture).
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.
