• How much do model series neck go for usually?

I'm not too satisfied with the model 1a's neck. The guitar buzzes allover and I don't know if I'll be able to shell out for a fretlevel/crowning and a refinish. I was thinking about selling it on here or maybe ebay so I could save up for a Warmoth one (all maple, reverse headstock, stainless steel frets, thin profile...). And yeah I do plan on selling it telling people the problem it has and the details of how it buzzed with the guitar don't worry. I was hoping between 100 and 150 dollars/100 euros?

?? If you're going to save up that much, why not save a few bux and go for the fretjob??

Because I'm not sure it will solve the problem. The guitar buzzed with VERY high action. The nut is well made (I thought so and so did the tech) and I found no high or loose frets. This guitar must just hate me. And here the fretjob + refinishing the neck is probably going to be cost me close to 150 or over that The warmoth neck would be about 250 with taxes and shipping I guess.

Basically here's what I can do:
1) get the non TB Full Shred from the person who sold the TB from me and swap them out. Get a new pickup for the 1a and put the TB10 in there and just get the neck's frets levelled and crowned. That should be about the budget I have. That can happen only if I'm positive the fret level will make the guitar playable.
2) get the Schaller Floyd and get a fully functionable model 4 which won't need much more updating. Then maybe sell the model 1a's neck and get a cheap one to work on and start saving up for the warmoth one for xmas.
3) sell the whole of the model 1a and look for a more 'beater' guitar as well as buying the Schaller.
4) use everything I have to repair the model 1a. I'm also receiving a rails pickup for it soon so it'll be a player.

You can see the dilema... I'm not even sure I have enough for the neck repair (I have 150 euros). If I get 100 euros for the neck I'll have enough for the warmoth neck. Then it won't be that long before I can get the SH10 and wap them out with a new pickguard too. But if the neck repair will solve the problem then there's no point in getting the warmoth and arrrrrgh my head burns.

I can't really see the dilemma because you're talking neck and then you switch to pickukps and tremolos. Let's focus on the neck for now...

#1) A Warmoth neck will cost you way more than a re-fret or any neck work will. Not only are Warmoth necks relatively expensive, they are not the same width as the neck pocket of your guitar. If I remember correctly Warmoth necks are cut to Fender dimensions. This is thicker(?) than Charvel imports.

#2) What kind of "tech" do you have? A proper tech would be able to look at the neck and give you an idea of what needs to be done with it and give you a good estimate. If something comes up while he/she is working on it they would/should call you to make a decision from there.

#3) I can't tell you what it would cost in euros, but I can get a re-fret done here in Chicago for about $80. While I could probably find an import Charvel neck on eBay for about $50, there's no guarantee that the neck I buy won't need fretwork or even truss work itself.

In essence, slow down. Take the guitar to other techs and shop around.

Ohhh damn... I thought the Charvel model series were just 100% like Fender Strats.
Mhmm ok... Here in Europe it's all way more expensive and I hear the tech here (small country, not a lot of them) is very good (used to be John Petrucci's tech) but very expensive. I sent an email to the shop but I haven't gotten a reply yet. I'll bring the guitar to them Saturday I think and see what they tell me.
80 dollars for a full refret on a maple neck? Damn if this was the case it'd be very nice. All I have at the moment is 150 euros available but it'll probably be about 200 in a week or so.

The only correlation between the Charvel Model 1A and a Fender Strat, is the configuration. Everything else is compatable with other import Charvels.

Do you have proof that this guy tech'd for Petrucci? Be very careful. In this day and age people can claim that they have teched for anyone. We had a member here who claimed to be Dave Mustaine's tech. He had a lot of people going for quite a while. My only claim to fame in the guitar-tech field is a couple of local bands.

Nah but everyone I know from here has been saying this to me. His name is Ivan Markovich that's all I know and I've heard he does great jobs anyway.
How are they different? The body are the exact same right? The neck pockets aren't?

They're different guitars made by two different companies. The body dimensions are similar to that of a Fender Strat (width, length, depth), but the neck pocket, body contours, neck feel, and obviously the headstock are different.

Ah damnit... Nothing will replace the neck but another model series neck I take it. Well that's one option down. It seems the problem is solved, I HAVE to repair the neck. Well thanks man

Looks like you've come to the correct solution although in a more roundabout way than I'm pointing out. Don't get me wrong, you can get a Warmoth neck for it, but it will cost you to modify the pocket to get it to fit. If you're going to put that much work and money into it, you may as well just get the neck fixed.

Yeah I don't want to mess up with it too much. Thanks a lot Tekky!

Re: How much do model series neck go for usually?

I thought the Model series pockets were lightly wider than the Warmoth necks at the heel. I've heard of quite a few guys saying they've dropped the Warmoth neck right in to the Model series neck pocket and there's just a tiny bit of space on either side and that the screws hold the neck in tight enough. Was I mistaken?

I never tried the conversion, that's why I put the question mark after my statement about the Warmoth width.
