• Model Series Numbers

I have noticed that in alot of threads dealing with the Model series they are always referred to as Mass Produced. Compared to the original San Dimas Charvels, you could consider them being mass produced.

But when compared to other 80s guitars how well did their numbers stand up? I mention this because of seeral years of hunting out SDs I have stumbled across very few Model series Charvels also. I've picked up everyone of them I've discovered.

Kramers, Peaveys, Fenders, Squiers, Hondos the list goes on. All out number the Charvels around here anyway. It could be that Charvel owners know what they have and won't part with them easily. Or maybe there aren't quite as many as we think.

We know there were 1000 model 88s.
But how many of each model was produced for each year?
1A's, 2's, 3's, 4's, 6's seem to be the most predominate models out there. That being said they are still not easy to find.

1's, 1C's 3A's, 4M's, 7's, 8's, and all versions of the 5 are much harder to come across.

1986 what maybe 8, 10, maybe as high as 12,000 units shipped world wide? Since it was a short year for them. Out of that how many of each model.

I know there is no way we could ever figure out how many model series guitars were made. Just an observation on my part.

I think there is a lot of that. I know I will never part with my Model 2. it's so killer and was my primary guitar for like 18 years, I would never ever sell it.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives

And out of those 10,000 guitars in 1986, how many of them are still in the United States? Just a guess but I'd say quite a few crossed the borders, so maybe a few of them are spread out. So that said maybe there are less than say 8000 1986 Charvels in the US.

Out of that I would say a 4M was a minute % of the total imports they sold, maybe 1% so there are about 80 Model 4M's in the US from 1986.

Out of them you got to figure quite a few of them were parted out over the years, so say 40% of them remain in stock condition (32).

Out of those the people actually willing to sell their rare guitar= 5%. So there are approximately 1.6 Model 4M's available at any given time in the US. Pretty darn rare.

Don't take this seriously as this was all just speculation, but probably closer to the truth than one wants to admit.

There were SUPPOSED to be 1000 Model 88's, but I have heard that it is likely that not all 1000 were produced. Ther is a story that there was a fire in the factory that was producing them halting production short of the 1000.
I've been tracking 88's that turn up here and there, and will someday compile a database. I believe someone else was doing this as well.

Re: Model Series Numbers

Seems strange that I have seen at least 5 Model 88's in the past year or so maybe more. Model 4M's maybe 2.

Re: Model Series Numbers

Not all models were made each year of production either, so the numbers get even smaller when you you look at models like the 4M and 1C.

Very true. The 1c's and super rare model 8's were made only in 1988.
I have seen at least 20 or so model 88s. I have seen 1 model 8 and 3 Model 1C's. Which makes you wonder if there were less of these made than the model 88s.

I would think so. Heck there is another Model 88 on Ebay right now actually. Go figure...

What exactly is a Model 4M? And a Model 1C? I haven't heard of these before. Please enlighten me!

A 4M has a maple board & dots rather than rosewood & sharkies. A 1C is a Model 1 with HSS layout. Mudkicker has one of each:

The 88 is definitely on my wish list. They are just mean looking guitars IMO.

Re: Model Series Numbers

I think this is a great idea. If we were ever going to "date" our guitars, knowing how many of each style/model that was made each year, along with the other important "specs" will get us all closer than we will ever be. And....This is the place (the site) to do it! ! ! Maybe the "forum" can create a list similar to the one on that "model 88 site", and we can all add our guitars to it! Example: One list for Model 3's and one list for Model 1's and one for Model 2's and one for model 7's....and on and on.....What do you say !

I also have a question and when I get home, I'll post a pic or 2 of my Charvel. I acquired it in trade and have to say that as I spend time getting it back to playing condition, I'm liking it more and more.
Is there a serial number database someplace to figure out origin, date, etc..?
