Re: 750XL info

Is that archtop pro a neck through or set neck as well? I really like how it's thinner, one of the things I really like about my sls is how small the body is. I thinking I'm going to be waiting a long time for some of these guitars to come up used. The bolt on fusions seem to come up more often, I might have to get one of those to tide me over. Man, too many guitars, not enough money . . .

Yep the AT Pro and 750 use the same construction method and scale lenght. The other difference is the ebony fret board and 3 way toggle on the AT Pro.The 750s used either a 3 or 5 way blade switch , I have had both styles. And the 750s have rosewood for the fret board.

The string through ATs will come up from time to time and are definitely the easier of the two to find. The 750s are just the opposite.

Re: 750XL info

Are there any other ways to tell if it's an AT Pro? It looks like a lot of the models are listed incorrectly on ebay. For a fixed bridge guitar I'm happy with the one I have but I'm trying to find a good floyd based one. I think the AT Pro is my first choice now with the 750 being second and a fusion third. Are there any other models you can think of that are neck through/set, short scale, with a floyd? I'm glad I found this board, you guys have been a great help. I just wish I found it sooner

There are no other J/Cs that spring to mind, so I think your best for finding more guitars like that would be to investigate other brands. Or go for a custom, but then we're talking about a lot more money...

Anyway, best of luck luck in your quest! And have a good christmas!

The easy way is to look at the inlays. All ATs and 750s came with reverse inlays and standard headstock. The ATs serial number will always start with a J0XXXXX or J1XXXXX and be stamped on the last fret. The 750s are C9XXXXX and are in the same place. The ATs will also always have a Mother of Pearl headstock logo.

The only other guitar that comes to mind is the early Warrior Pros with the slanted pickups.I think the early USA version were short scale also.Unfornately the Warrior are about as hard to find as the AT Pro.

Here's another pic you can envy. This one now has EMG's and is totally brillant.

If there were any 750xls made during 1990, it was only a handful. They were only listed in the 1989 catalog, I believe. The AT Pro replaced it for 1990-91.

I've got a string-thru 750 on its way to me right now. I've tried out trem versions of both the 750 and the AT Pro and found that the 750 had the better tone of the two. I'm sure the different body thickness makes a huge difference--the AT Pro has the same maple top, but less mahogany underneath it. I have it on good authority, however, that the string-thru AT Pro has killer tone.

I think I'll probably try to pick up an AT Pro sometime in 06 just because of the smaller/thinner body over the 750. But if a 750 with a floyd pops up I'll have to see if I can resist Which EMG model did you use? I've been playing around with some passives lately but am not completely sold on them yet and might go back to some EMG.

I had a pair of EMG 89's in my first 750xl. They got promptly replaced. When split, the cleans were very clean. But the pickups just sounded sterile to me. I know, that's an age old argument. But to my ears, passives just sound better. There is a large group of people who like EMG's in their 750's. I have also sold quite a few people on the Duncan Distortion in the bridge of that guitar.

My 750's all have Duncans in them now:
1)Custom-Custom/APH-1
2)59/59
3)Distortion/Distortion

What passives have you played around with that you haven't been sold on?

Re: 750XL info

I just installed a JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck and use the tone to split both of them. I have 89s in everything else and really like the single coil tones also. I'm pretty happy with the humbucker sounds as well, they just don't fit in my latest guitar The JB/Jazz sound pretty good in humbucker mode but I don't like the clean single coil as much. I've used various paf clones and one really hot pu that I couldn't get clean tones out of. It gets pretty expensive trying too many different pickups since most places won't take them back.

Re: 750XL info

Duncan and DiMarzio both offer exchange policies. Duncan's is 21 days and I think DiMarzio is 30. I believe that any authorized dealer has to honor that policy.

For what it's worth, the JB/Jazz was originally designed to go in Jeff Beck's Fender which had 250k pots in it. Those pickups tend to be a little bright to me, so a lower value pot will tame the highs a bit.

What kind of tones are you looking to get out of your pickups?

I did replace my volume pot with a 250k but not the tone yet. The JB/Jazz are REALLY bright to me, it's the first time I've ever used the tone control. It's not even hooked up on most of my guitars. For a dirty sound the JB in the bridge is nice and I'm happy with it. Most of the time however I play clean and on all my other guitars I use the emg 89s in sa mode with both neck and bridge selected. It's very much like the neck and middle of a strat. The JB/Jazz split sounds a lot thinner with less low end and lot lower volume. Overall, kind of wimpy I guess. Plus the noise is really bad, I never get that with the emgs. It might just be that I'm so used to that one tone everything else sounds off to me. I never knew it before but the sa mode in the 89 is a real single coil pickup. I just kept buying them and putting them in my guitars, until this one and they don't fit. I might just break down and make the cavity bigger so they fit.

You might check into the DiMarzio Humbucker From Hell. I've never tried it, but a lot of people really like it. It's supposed to be extremely clean and clear, pretty much like a single coil but without the noise.

Thanks, I might pick one up to try before I decide on the emg thing. Might as well while I have the correct pots still installed. One of these days I really have to start getting h/s/s guitars instead.
