Re: 750XL info

The old 5-way switch that J/C used on the Model 5 was crazy complicated. I assume this is the same one on my 750, though I haven't opened it up yet to take a look. Despite the complexity, it really doesn't do anymore than the Stewmac 5-way Megaswitch, which I've installed in other guitars before with no problem.

The J80C in the bridge of my 750 is pretty high output, actually. I'd say at least as hot as a Duncan Distortion, if not slightly hotter. It's not quite as refined as a Distortion with that nice upper-mid bump, and I'm still considering making a change. But the J80 in this guitar is the first time EVER that I've been basically satisfied with a stock Jackson pickup.

Were all 750XL's maple cap on mahogany body? I've seen the flame maple topped with transparent finishes, were the metallic/opaque finished 750's capped with plain/non flame maple?
Thanks to whoever answers this

Yes because it was a custom switch to get diffrent comnbination, I have the spec sheet the techs from ft.worth faxed me like in July 2000. I would post it here but I dont have a scanner....I will try to take some digital shots and the admins can post them up on the site, the san dimas re-issue II uses the same switch...as the 750XL. or maybe I will consolidate down to one 7-string. I've basically stopped played Floyds altogether, so I could probably lose guitars with those and not cry too much over it, though I have no plans to get rid of my ESP. I hate Floyds now but love that guitar dearly. It all sorta depends on what tempts me on eBay, as you know.

I thought you sold your other 7?

If you decide to sell the Fernandes, drop me a line. Not like I have any money, but...

That's correct--the solid finish 750XLs were made out of the same materials the trans finishes, but they used non-figured maple for the tops. I recall somebody here saying that the body on their solid-finish 750 turned out to be basswood after they stripped off the finish. That's the only case like that I've heard of--maybe that was a prototype or something.

I had intended to, but the guy that expressed interest in it when I first bought it turned out not to have the money when I finally decided to sell. Afterward, I decided to think about it some more, since it is a pretty rare beast. I may still end up selling it, and I'll give you dibs if I do--it won't be for awhile.

I'm also giving some consideration to the idea of transferring the Sustainer electronics to a fixed-bridge seven. Although it's fun to do the full Vai thing with the sustainer and the trem bar, I prefer to use it to enhance my legato approach, rather than to imitate an air-raid siren. At that point, I wouldn't expect to get a lot for the Fernandes sans fancy electronics, but I wouldn't need to, either.

Hmm. Since I'm just looking for a Floyd 7 string, that might be pretty cool...

I think I need a 7 string 750XL. Maybe 27"?

I'd love to have one with a 25.5" scale. Geez, talk about an expensive Custom Shop piece.

25.5" scale? No way man, there aren't nearly enough 24.75" scale guitars out there. Most everything these days are either 25" or 25.5"

True, but 24.75" scale doesn't work so well for 7-string guitars, which was what I was talking about as my custom shop dream.

Ahh, sorry I misunderstood. I could see how the longer scale would be better for the 7 strings. I don't know much about them. Are most 25.5" or are they usually longer? I tried an Ibanez once but it was uncomfortable for me to reach the 7th string and I had a hard time wraping my thumb around the neck. I haven't tried one since.

Most 7s are 25.5" - some are 26.5" or 27".

You have to use a different hanfd technique with the thicker neck, but the adjustment isn't difficult.

{back on topic, now}

Do any of the locals know if Matt @ Action ever sold the 750XL w/trem and 2 EMG 89s? I played that guitar several times, but I haven't been in there for a while...

Since I've had both the J80C and the DD in my 750, I'd say the DD is slightly hotter. It overdrives the preamp better for me anyway. I agree that the J80C sounds really nice though. If coupled with a gain booster, it would scream for sure. =) I am very happy I heeded Travis' advice and went with the DD in the 750. I've had my favourite EMGs in it as well, but they just weren't right for the guitar.

Oh yeah, a long time ago. I dithered on that one for too long, and he had just sold it when I finally went in to buy it. That was a nice one.

Matt hasn't gotten any decent new shredder guitars in stock in quite awhile now. He's got an incredible '84 Rhoads w/factory Floyd that he's had for awhile, but he's asking somewhere around $1800, so I think he'll have a hard time moving it. Apart from that, the last J/C I remember was a Performer series Kelly, but even that's gone now. He also had a really nice Kramer Stagemaster for a long time that I almost bought, but my increasing aversion to Floyds turned me away from that. At the moment, he's pretty much all Gibson/Fender.

I think that eBay has taken away most of the '80s market from the used guitar stores, which don't seem to want those guitars much, anyway.

Last night I was comparing my 750 to another guitar I have with a DD in it, and I think you're right. Overall, I think the DD has a slightly 'finer' sound to it, and I'll probably end up making a change, though I'm in no hurry to do so.
