  • Model 2 questions...

The last model 2 I owned was in the mid 80's, with the fulcrum Kahler. The one I am looking at has the JT-6. How is the JT-6 compared to an OFR? Also, I remember that the stock J90C p-up wasn't all that. Is my memory correct? I have a vintage Gibson 'Dirty Fingers' in my parts box. Would you make the switch? (I would be buying the guitar without having a chance to see it personally to evaluate all ofthis for myself). Thanks in advance.

I own a model 2 with the fulcrum, works fine and stays in tune. I have owned a few JT-6's and OFR's also, JT-6 works well but the OFR is nicer looking and has a more solid feel. I like my fulcrum better that a JT-6 because of the way it feels under my hand, I don't use a bar much so all I care about is tuning stability. The stock pup is hot but a little mushy in the low end for me, I use a Dimarzio in mine. My model 2 gets more play than any other guitar I own!

The big advantage of the JT-6 is that it's easy to replace with an OFR. The design isn't bad, but it's made of soft metal and the tolerances aren't nearly as tight as an OFR or Schaller. The JT-6 has slightly narrower string spacing, 2" vs. 2 1/8" for the OFR. If the trem is in good shape and you don't plan on really using it a lot, it has pretty good tuning stability. I wouldn't let it stop you from buying the guitar, especially if it's a good deal.

I love my model 2, it has a JT-6 which I like alot. I like where the tuners are located.
I still keep practicing though.... Mostly because I hate my neighbors.-MakeAJazzNoiseHere

Thank you for the responses. For about $140, it sounds good. Once I get it, I may go for an OFR and the requisite paint job from Big Head. Now the decision is another HRF or an offfset Bullseye...

IMO the OLD dirty fingers are OK a little muddy when pushed. The new reissue DF's suck big time.
The Mod 2's sound great with an old Duncan or DiMarzio. Use a high quality pot(cts)when putting it back together and mail me the J90C.
I vote for the offset bullseye.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

i got a dimarzio super distortion in my 88 mod two with a jt6...very 80s sounding....love it!!! also i think jt6s are cool but no where near as responsive as a good kahler, but it does give more control....personally i don't use the bar a huge amount anyway, just for coolk sounds/divebombs

                Re: Model 2 questions...

LOL, I think another JCF member wanted it more, so I balked. I am a Kahler fan over Floyds, but after a short time, I rarely use the things. (My playing is more Ace meets Buddy Guy).

On to the next project fueled by Paul Miller at Big Head: offset white bullseye strat over black, Dimarzio Virtual PAF in Black, vintage brass bridge and a Muiskraft strathead.

I have a '79 Dimarzio Super Distortion. It went microphonic. I haven't had time top re-pot it yet.

The Dirty Fingers is going to a friend. I prefer to hear more than just the p-up.

After 20 odd years at this hobby, I don't think I will outgrow it. On with the obsession. It never is, just one more guitar...

For $140???? you are going to buy the guitar or the OFR for that price?

Check my sig, I live in Japan. 80's Japanese Charvels don't have a large following as they do elsewhere.

Was that the blue Model 2 that was on eBay a couple of days ago? AUCTION LINK <---

If so, then I thought it went for stupid money considering the high bidder "ok-whatever" lives in the USA. The $99 shipping in addition to the $240.37 it went for made him pay WAY up for that one!

Now El_Kabong, considering you are in Japan that would have been a great deal for you even if you had bid it up to $275 or $300 assuming you didn't have to pay $99 for shipping.

I was watching that auction hoping that everyone would be scared away from it so I could swoop in and steal it.

By the way, I asked the seller this question, but they didn't know the answer so I am hoping you may be able to answer it. If I win an auction from Japan, would I have had to pay any import fees or taxes for shipment into the USA? Since I didn't know the answer to that question was another reason I didn't bid on it.

Yes, Razor, it was the blue model 2 on the Bay. It would have cost me $20 to have it couriered to my city overnight. I can't believe someone wanted it it that bad. I am guessing that they are a serviceman and can have it shipped for peanuts. As my intention was to mod it and sink more cash into it, I baulked. The buyer is into export Charvels by looking at his feedback and is probably a member here. I hope it is a guitar that they really wanted, as I would have modded the hell out of it.

As per your last question, sorry, I can't answer it. I am not American, nor have I ever lived in America.
