• I.D.ing a Charvel

    Hey,

I found a Charvel at a pawn shop for less than 2 bills. I'd like some help with what it is. They may not know what they've got there.

It's a single pup, single knob, 2 point trem - non locking, but it's had a vintage type whammy put on it, pointy head, maple FB, and the logo is the guitar shape (not toothpaste).

It's kinda beat up but looks like it could use a good home.

May be a Model 1M, but there were two guitar-shaped logos - the USA models had a 3x3 headstock on the logo, the Japanese models had a 6-inline headstock on the logo.

Of course, the "experts" here will tell you that no one would ever take a v-trem San Dimas and mount a 2-point Kahler on it, and certainly no one would ever swap it back to a v-trem from a 2-point Kahler

This one had a 2 point at one time. There's a vintage one one it now. And it looks like the stock neck with a regular nut. I wonder why someone would switch trems.

I'll check back at the pawn shop where it is and see about the logo.

            vintage 2 point or 6-point?

The model 1 (there is no 1M) had elements similar to this description, however the gotoh tremolos were 6-point vintage tremolos.

It has a 6 point that someone put on. I don't think it's in the right position tho cause it set about a half inch back from the original 2 holes.

I'd love to do a refin and replace the trem back to original.

I wonder if someone had attempted to put a Floyd on it, hence the two holes in front of the trad trem.

                  That's a distinct possibility.

Yes, the "1M" thing is a common misconception. As far as I know, in 1986 all model 1's and 1A's had maple boards.

If you look at the thread that has "'86 Charvel catalogue pics", it looks exactly like the red one.

I still haven't gotten buy the shop where it's at to see which logo it has.
