  • model series questions

OK more of a USA charvel guy but I got a few questions.

What is the clear coat on the early model series guitars the kahler pro and JT6 era? I know its poly but what kind?

Whats teh heel width on a model series neck?

    Re: model series questions

The neck heel tapers from 2 1/4" to 2 1/8". It's considered a 2 1/4" heel though. As far as the poly, are you trying to find out what brand? All I know is they used a two component clear poly, and probably the cheapest crap they could find.

It's one of the hardest finishes to strip and sand off, I've ever come across. Maybe thats what helps make these as tough as Sherman tanks.

Are there any early model series without basswood bodies? I've been thinking about grabbing one but I'm not the biggest fan of basswood.

                  Model 5 or 6. They're Maple/Poplar.

Not an early one, but Model 88 has a mahogany body I think (?).

Also the Model 7 is supposedly Ash. Well at least, I hear the natural ones were. I have yet to pull mine apart (it's black). It weighs a ton so I suspect it is ash too...

That's very possible. Polyester clears typically have a thicker build with fewer coats (higher solids content), so it would speed up production I suppose. The bottom line is that when cured, all of the poly finishes have the same topcoat compatibility, so it's not an issue when refinishing a guitar. To my knowledge, you can put ANY type of finish over ANY type of poly without any adverse effects. I will add though, that I'm not an authority on polyester clears, because I don't use them. I believe they are mostly used in boat refins over gel coat.

                          I think it's poly-wannacracker.
