• 375 Deluxe question

Would the 375 ever have been made with a solid maple body? I was always under the impression that it was flame maple top/alder/flame maple back. However, while shanging strings today, I noticed the grain inside the cavity connects with the grain on the top and the back.. If it were a veneer or a cap, it wouldn't.. So, was there ever a run of solid flamed maple bodies? If so, that's insane!

It was never basswood. It is sposta be maple/alder/maple. All the early toothpaste models were alder. I think later, when things were going way cheap like with the charvettes and the cx's, they went to basswood. But the early 90's stuff was good wood.

The catalogs say that it's basswood for solid colors and basswood with flamed maple back and top for trans colors.

Correct. All were basswood. The reason the top may seem to "blend" with the rest of the body is that it was a very thin veneer. From a cross section view, you'd have a hard time picking it out.

To take this a bit back further in time, the literature says that Model 3s had basswood bodies. I can tell you that my Model 3 definitely does not weigh like it's made out of basswood.

Yeah, my Model 7 is the same. It's supposedly basswood because it's painted. The natural finished ones were ash. By the weight of it, I'm betting it's ash as well and NOT basswood...I'm going to find out soon.

I disagree. It doesn't just seem to blend.. It lines up perfectly with a very distictive grain in the cavity. Pick any spot on the grain from the top, you can follow it all the way down to the other side where it lines up perfectly. So either they manged to match the blanks up, or the thing is one piece of something..

I know that. But I don't believe it. Yet.

Well, I'm going by documentation that originated from Jackson/Charvel.

Yep, I know. It's just this weighs a ton and I know how heavy ash is (got an early Roadstar II in ash). I will take the neck off when I get a chance.
