Any of you dudes ever notice the weight
and heft of the old bolt-on strat-style Charvels? What's up with this anyway. The
one I have now is way heavy and so was one I had before. The old one I had was like a model 3 I believe and the one now
is true strat-style with a pickguard.Does
anybody know what the body wood used in these things was by chance? I didn't think alder was this heavy so maybe it's ash?

The ever popular, poplar.

I thought they had basswood bodies...

Of course, I don't even own a bolt-on Model guitar, so how the heck would I know??

Well, according to the 1986 catalog I have the bolt-on's are Basswood. The Model 6 had a maple neck-thru with Poplar wings.

Yeah, Budman is right. The bolt-ons were basswood, and the neck thrus (Model 5 and 6) had poplar wings. Everybody always talks about basswood being light, but my bolt-on Model series guitars are heavy.

That's cool.Looks like Basswood it'll be.
I know Ibanez uses that alot in their
guitars, but I've never run across one
heavy like the Charvels. They're all light to me.I put an old Kahler flat-mount on this Charvel(replacing the "traditional"-style
it had) with a Floyd nut.Anybody know what strings might work best with one of
these(Kahlers),as far as stayin'-in-tunewise?
Appreciate it

I use either 9-42's or 10-46's on my Kahler equipped axes. I don't use the same brand consistently, but most brands I've used work just fine and stay in tune well. The one thing about Kahlers is that there are more adjustments to be made on them than on a Floyd. I hate trying to set them up, but it might just be me. I started using those trems in 1984 and still use them today, as well as the Floyd.

Yeah Word...my basswood axes are not light at all.

I didn't realize it,but somebody else down the list was askin' about Kahler
strings too.I went ahead and looked at the links on that one and figure I'll try some of the little tricks I found.I must not be doing something right 'cause mine's always slipping out of tune alot. I didn't even know that that one hex adjustment was for the arm tightness(got mine used,no manual). Is Kahler really in the golf club business now? That's crazy. Thanx Bros

My 88 Model 4 is basswood it's not that heavy unless you compare it with my SG. My 91 275DLX is Alder the body is a DK style so a little less girth than the M4 and it wieghs about the same.

I grew up with 70's Strats and I have a '77 Fuji-Gen Gakki Strat copy[1], compared to which even Les Pauls are light. I was over 35 before I realised that a Strat wasn't supposed to weigh in excess of 10 lbs
