  • Our miserable Model 2's

Do you think there's a chance that the good 80'ies Model series were for the US market and the messy ones went to Europe?

I'm asking because i have often wondered why the 80'ies Charvel Model import series are considered a good bargain by the JCF members. They are considered good guitars by all of you it seems.

But here i am, in Europe, and i clearly remember what the Model 2 was like when i had it around 1987. It was bad! I had a red one, my other gtr player had a white one, another gtr player had a white one, my drummer had a red one - all Model 2's. And they were all in pretty bad shape from the beginning. They were ALL bought new. They all had bad (unfixable) intonation, bad JT-6 tremolos never returning to zero, high action or rattle, dull sounding acoustically, not one of them necks were straight, one was even twisted.

Now, i didn't know much about adjusting and tweaking guitars back then, but several of us went and got the guitars fixed by professionals, but they never came out as great playing guitars. They were simply shitty to play.

I personally got a Hagström Les Paul afterwards and an Ibanez Roadstar (Lukather) and jesus, what took me so long. My gtr friend got an ESP Mirage and never looked back.

I am really tempted to buy another Model 2, to prove to myself that i was an unexperienced boy, but the the idea came to me, that we europeans got the crappy models build by some 13 years old trainees at the japanese factory.

What do you europeans think of the Model series back then?

I'm in the UK and in 1988 my first decent guitar was a metallic white model 2, and it was (and is) a great guitar - I didn't experience any such problems with it. Unfortunately I added a neck hum, then stripped it, then got it (badly) painted with the Simpsons but it's still a structurally decent guitar....

that's interesting, this is the first I've heard of this.

I got an 86 Model 2 new back then and have had it all this time. it is not just a good guitar, it is a fantastic guitar in every aspect. excellent finish, it has not faded color at all, the neck is divine, and it is very resonant. it outplays many other more expensive guitars I have tried and owned. the workmanship is top notch and the Kahler floating trem has always been fine.

I think once they started putting the JT-6 trems on these in 87 and 88, those became the weak point of the guitar. they just weren't very good trems and were made poorly. but many US customers of even those still love them to death.

I'd be interested to hear from other EU folks as to their experience with the Model series.

the sound of my 88 model two sucked..no sustain at all...and totally lacking in depth, and mid range....trem was cool tho...neck nowhere near as playable as my 86 mod 4

I like it with the Kahler, higher quality trem. Neck has a poor fit but plays very well.

Model 2's are (and were) damn nice guitars in every aspect. The neck profiles didn't change from 86 to 88 that I'm aware of, just the trem. The JT6 is a damn good unit, and I have always loved them. The Kahler fulcrum was also a damn good little trem, but required a bit more maintenence to keep it working effeciently. As far as some model 2's being pieces of crap, I'm sure there were some........but remember that any guitar can seem to be a total piece of shit if it isn't set up correctly. I will still say that over all they were some of the best guitars coming out of the Japanese factory at the time. Lots of bang for the buck for sure.

The idea of duds being sent to europe is far fetched, i know. It's just striking that the four (4!) Model 2's i've known has been less than good.

I'm willing to say that we were noobs that didn't know the secrets to a properly adjusted guitar. And the tech's around here at that time (and even now) are mediocre at best, so that's something to consider too.

I think i'll take a closer look at one of those Model 2's again. I know a guy who has had one since 1987, he never played it, he never did any maintanance on it. I bet it's all rusty and dry

Definitely give them another shot Henrik, now that you're a little older and a lot "wiser" ....it'll all be good. I promise.

I have a model 2 - It was the first Charvel (jackson/charvel) I ever owned....It looks exactly like the picture above (jcm800x's axe) - has a Kahler and is strung a little high with 12's-54 and is one of the best "feeling", playing and sounding guitars I have ever owned. A very cool axe !

I love the design of the JT6, but the metal quality completely sucks. Jackson should reintroduce the JT6, but this time have them made by Schaller.

                    That would rock.

Definitely, if the JT6 had a hardened steel base plate it would be the end all of trems.

I like my Model 2 better than my Soloist.

                            there's just something about them.

I remember loving the simplicity of it when I bought mine 20 yrs ago.

I'm making inquiries right now to see if the guy i know wants to part with his and what the price is.
